I get my news on American politics from The Young Turks on youtube. Got to admire the tenacity of the republicans on obamacare even though they can't get what they want. I found 'Ted Cruz concedes obamacare repeal defeat, enrages GOP' and 'republicans vs sanity government shutdown looms' fairly interesting vids.

For once, I feel happy not being 'Merican.

Why? This is actually really great.

While the government is shut down, we can stop fulfilling all the bloated programs and services we generally don't need and focus on those that are crucial. The over-inflated government staff is mostly out of work for now, which is good because the US Government is 60% more staffed than it needs to be. We save money and raise efficiency for each day the government stays shut down.

Let it stay down.

Essential services like air traffic control, the military, and other such things are still up and running.

I just have one question.... Since the government shut down, who will spy on us, waste our money, arm terrorists, and have contempt for us?

The economy will loose 55 billion in the first month.  Many essential personnel will be expected to work without paychecks.  Businesses that are positioned alongside any of the parks will suffer and have lost revenue.  Example: bars, restaurants etc surrounding  the Mall in DC will become like a ghost-town.  When the dept ceiling debate comes up soon we could face total shutdown where millions will be effected.  Air-travel will be shutdown, FBI, Military, SSI etc.

All of you who believe this is good are fools.  There will come incredible inefficiencies across the country if this continues.

The people who are sent home, with out pay may have been counting on that to pay rent/bills.  May be forced to move or face collectors.  May not be able bring children to the doctor.  800,000 people are effected and not every person has enough savings or credit to get on without a paycheck.

There are some who argue that these services, and others, should be shut down as well so that the average American will have a better understanding of its impact.  SSI is around 700 billion annually.  That is around 5% of the economy.

The govt being "shutdown" as people like to say, will not affect those in political power but the low man on the totem pole.

Osama and wife will still be getting his checks, both house and senate members will still be getting their checks.

As F Charlie pointed out, just about every immediate business to federally backed geographic locations (ex. state parks) and/or businesses will lose monthly profit from tourists and locals. The 96-97 shutdown cost $1.4B for 21 days. What is a "shutdown" going to cost the American people now?

Assuming that right wing repubs are hell bent on saying no "socialist medicine" and obama has already said he wont back down from it passing. We, in the US and those who depend on the US for aid, are in for a very large drop in the economy. To bring up another point, this not only affects those in the immediate area of capital hill and the aforementioned parks, businesses etc; other countries are in for it as well. Granted, I don't think we need to be spending billions on other countries right now anyway, but that is for another discussion.

I am not sure about foriegn expenditures but we have food aI'd programs internationally and the money our soldier would get paid to them won't be spent in foreign stores/shops etc.

> The economy will loose 55 billion in the first month.

That's about a third of a percent of the annual GDP. A slight hit, but worth it.

>Many essential personnel will be expected to work without paychecks.

No, all the essential ones still have work and are in functioning jobs. The majority of the people not working right now aren't needed anyways.

> Businesses that are positioned alongside any of the parks will suffer and have lost revenue.

The republicans are trying to pass a bill to allow the parks to open, but the democrats won't pass it.

> Example: bars, restaurants etc surrounding  the Mall in DC will become like a ghost-town.

I was there yesterday and today, I can confirm they are all open and quite fine. I'm pretty sure that people will visit DC whether the monuments are open or not. The amount of business lost in DC during this time period will be semi-significant in DC and have essentially no effect on the country as a whole.

> When the dept ceiling debate comes up soon we could face total shutdown where millions will be effected.

That's a different issue, the current shutdown is a minor nuisance. A good one, too.

> Air-travel will be shutdown, FBI, Military, SSI etc.

Again, we're not at the debt ceiling yet. No point in discussing it in a thread focused about this unrelated shutdown. No one KNOWS what will happen if the government defaults, so saying that you DO know means that you know better than any government analyst right now. It's uncharted territory. There's such a small chance we'll actually default, and if we do, a secret stash of money will magically turn up once agreements have been made. One party or the other will fall to their knees, hopefully the democrats on this one. I'm not republican, but they're the ones responsible for the shutdown, so for now I'm definitely with them.

> All of you who believe this is good are fools.  There will come incredible inefficiencies across the country if this continues.

No, most inefficiencies are gone; the bloated government job workers aren't on job, roads around government sectors are flowing unusually well, major services other than the parks are running just fine, etc. You're just spewing the shit the media is spewing.

> The people who are sent home, with out pay may have been counting on that to pay rent/bills.

Most government workers are paid pretty well. The government will only be shut down until the 17th at the latest, and likely will reopen far earlier than that.

> May be forced to move or face collectors.

After 2 fucking weeks? Come on.

Oh, come on. That's just fucking retarded. You should be a washington post news reporter, m8

1. I said there are some who are still working and not getting a check.

2. Rangers are not needed, some NSA not needed, 97% of NASA people not needed?  Essential means defense, security and has nothing to do with what is needed.

3. Democrats don't need to pass anything.  These appropriations bills are to cover a budget that has already been passed by these Republicans.  They simply can't stand that they lost elections and without gerrymandering they wouldn't even have the House.

4. I am sure people will go to DC.  Sure.

5. Again, if they don't allow spending past the dept ceiling it will stop everything or through it all into chaos.  Sorry, Republicans are responsible for this.

6. Again, foolish thinking, there are a lot of inefficiencies in the world, the gov is not the only large organization that may have that problem.  Highways are running better around DC.  Awesome.

7. Some of the furloughed workers returned not that long ago due to sequester furloughs.  You don't know peoples finances or their situation.

Note again, the Affordable care act has already been funded and is not a part of this budget appropriations.  These appropriations are for a budget that these Republicans already passed.  If they wanted to change either this budget or the ACA they had their chance to and either failed or did not have the votes to do anything about it because they lost elections
