What's in your rig?

Why do so many of you use rigs with 12 or 16 gb of ram? In my experience, even when video editing and other intensive things, anything higher than 8 GB is just a waste of money.

I find it useful personally because I tend to leave TF2 running while I've got other stuff open (Chrome, Adobe Premiere, GTASA).  If you hunt around for it, you can get it for pretty cheap - when I got my RAM, they were selling sets of 8GB DDR3-1600 for 24.99 each.

Anyhow, mine:

  • Case: BitFenix Merc Beta
  • Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-D3
  • Video: Gigabyte NVidia GTX 550 Ti
  • CPU: AMD Phenom II Tri-Core 2.8GHz
  • PSU: Shitty Chinese brand I can't remember, 500W
  • HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB (dog shit in a metal box)
  • Peripherals: Logitech G13, 2x Acer monitors that I can't be bothered to measure

my computer does well over 8gb of ram whenever i let it do so. just enable cuda processing and it can take 8gb+. with processor encoding i havent reached that much though

Don't go 660

650 Ti Boost is gonna work fine, and it is cheaper.

i wouldnt say that at all. 650 ti boost is imo so shitty. 660 overclocks way better and at a much lower temperature. the price difference between 650 ti  boost and 660 isnt that much to be limited by money. id rather step down in processor or motherboard when gaming

installing linux broke your mobo?

No. Fuckin EVGA rigged the reviews on new egg saying 10/10 EREHMGEE.

On Amazon everyone has the same problem.

On first boot (of anything) the bios corrupts.

Have to get a new bios chip via mexi-mail. -.-"

That case seems a bit modest for that build.

Is you ok

No.

My motherboard was shipped faulty and fucking broken (bios). This board is almost 2 years old and every board has the same problems.

I tried everything, even booting into DOS to flash a new BIOS. But my board can not boot anything. It recognizes the hardware, but cant boot.

I have to wait 10 days for a new bios chip. If that doesnt work, I need to disasemble my whole machine, take out the board, get a new one, rebuild it and finally get it working.

Not ok.
