Santa Heavy
So basically my harddrive fried on my HP Pavillion g7, which is a laptop. It's completely corrupted and I figure I can save some cash by installing a new harddrive myself. I want to know how much I should pay for this new harddrive and what capacity would be appropriate for this laptop. Links to some nice compatible harddrives would also help. Figured I'd ask here because some of you are fucking wizards and this would be childs play EZ modo to help with.

Bakgrund
I'm surprised no one has mentioned SSD's, we live in 2014, come on don't buy a fucking hard drive, get a good SSD and you're good to go. Any of Intels or Samsungs latest SSD's with the capacity of your choice will do well.

Pyrocide
Just out of curiosity, are you sure the drive is bad and not just the OS? SSDs are expensive. This being a cheap laptop i doubt he would want to spend the cash on a SSD that he will not benefit from, at all, except maybe e-peen. IF, keyword, if, you want to spend the cash on an SSD, have a look at the WD Black2. 120GB SSD + 1TB spinner, IMO a fantastic upgrade for laptops with only one sata drive slot and no msata slots. Also, Newegg is having a sale on Samsung EVO drives just FYI.
Bakgrund
Its a pavillion g7, theres literally no point Are you joking right now? An ssd makes any old computer run fast(er), your computer will start faster, programs will load faster, your battery will last longer, your computer will run more quiet, no god damn sounds from the drive etcetcetc, in this day and age if you are replacing a laptops mass-storage, there's no reason to buy a hard drive. At least get a hybrid.

He wouldn't notice a huge improvement with an ssd, hence spending a lot more for one is just stupid. Noise and battery life difference are negligible between an ssd and an hdd. hdd aren't that power hungry anymore and hdd are quite quiet, especially compared to a laptop fan. You fail to realize that no drive will improve game performance which you seem to talk about when you mention had and could bottlenecks. Everyday tasks will always feel snappier with an ssd. You could go on forever to fix bottlenecks but there will always be one component that's weaker than another. A drive manages files, not processing hence an ssd WILL ALWAYS improve loading times no matter what cpu or gpu you have. Why do you think weak ultrabooks ship with ssds rather than hdds? just an example. The fact will always be that an ssd will improve your computer's responsiveness. Ultrabooks ship with ssd for the same reason new cameras ship with more megapixels--ssds can be marketed as superior, premium drive therefore warranting a higher price. Will an ssd be faster? Yes. Will it be a meaningful amount considering the other specs? No. isn't very beneficial

An SSD is worth every cent in all configurations and if you knew anything about ssd's you would know that. Comparing an ssd to megapixels is just absurd. It's like comparing a car to a golf-ball, you can't compare a thing to a fucking specification on ONE component.

I'm currently using an ssd, but the fact of the matter is that an ssd won't provide such a huge benefit on a crappy computer. Since an ssd isn't affected by anything else and therefore will automatically speed up a computer, why don't you throw an ssd in a 10 year old pc you've just got lying around. After all, it'll give you a huge performance boost and you'll definitely be able to use it again. Its really not all that absurd. Megapixels are a gimmick to sell cameras. SSDs are a gimmick to sell ultrabooks. Yes, ssds are faster, yes they're quieter, yes they're pretty much all around better (excluding price and capacity); but ssds are in ultra books mainly to give people the impression that they're much better than they actually are and to warrant the high prices. You can get a 500GB SSD for 269 bucks, that's extremely much SSD storage for your money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147249&nm_mc=OTC-FroogleNEW&cm_mmc=OTC-FroogleNEW-_-Solid%20State%20Disk-_-SAMSUNG-_-20147249 At that price i wouldn't consider it as a gimmick for all the benefits you get. Also please go back to a crappy mechanical disk for a day and then go back to your SSD, you would want to suicide. Do you seriously see a compelling reason to go with a hard drive in this day and age? Ssd's have dropped in price since you bought your.

Lets see, I can drop $250 on a 500gb ssd, which will open up programs faster but make everything else seem slower by comparison, or spend $70 and get a 1tb hdd. And especially in a laptop where you're limited to only one drive, an hdd becomes an excellent choice. And I have switched off between hdd and ssds. Yeah, its a bit slower, but does opening up safari .08 seconds faster warrant a 200 price tag? not really.

Yeah, its a bit slower, but does opening up safari .08 seconds faster warrant a 200 price tag? not really. You can replace your optical drive with another storage drive so it's not an issue. And why get a slow stone-age HDD when you atleast can get a hybrid drive with just a tiny bit less storage for the same price as a normal hard drive? Even a hybrid drive makes everything feel much faster. Also you're a osx user, osx seem to load programs faster than Windows, and osx which basically is Linux is much more light weight. Programs will load faster. Unless you plan to store 500GB porn you don't need a terabyte hdd with today's reliable streaming and cloud services. But with 500GB that's not an issue. Pyrocide
OS X is Unix, btw. I personally refuse to store any of my shit on the cloud. Not because it costs money or anything, but because once its in the cloud its available to anyone with enough willpower to want it. Bitcoin is a perfect example. Although I would have to agree that keeping it stored locally on SSD or HDD is not a good idea. If that drive fails, yes SSDs do fail on occasion, anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron. Seagate Barracudas proved HDDs don't last. My Samsung Evo is the 2nd replacement as the first two were DOA and bricked after recommended f/w update, respectively. Personally I think external storage is still a better method of storing data. For santa heavy, i would recommend a hybrid drive *cough*WDBlack2*cough*. best of both worlds.
