Can Item Histories reset?

Some time ago (like a year) I sold an unusual to someone. To see where it's journey goes I bookmarked the History page of it.

 

It displayed my name as the original unboxer and the one I traded it to. I think he sold his backpack later on and for some time the hat was lost until it sprung up in another guys backpack.

For some time his name, the one i sold it to and my name was in the history but from one day to the next, the history list only showes the current holder.

 

Can item histories randomly vanish? could it be that this hat is another version of it and was wrongly identified as the the one I traded away? Just curious.

There was an item wipe recently, so that's why the item history reset.

Sorry thats the first time I hear about an item wipe. What does that mean? wiped ingame and why exactly?

 backpack.tf has a log of histories when people look at it; eg if i hold a strange original and you look at the item on backpack.tf in my inventory backpack logs it; i trade it to my friend and they trade it to someone who then opens their backpack inventory (as far as i understand it) backpack will show history for me and the last person but skip middle who didnt log it to their inventory

They can be erased if the history DB is left open to the Internet, someone drops the tables, and there's zero backups. Otherwise it's unlikely.
