Could this be considered sharking?

So, I have been browsing some of SexySparta's buy orders and I have been really disgusted at how low some of these really are...

https://backpack.tf/stats/Unusual/Rotation Sensation/Tradable/Craftable/79 - All-Class Darkblaze worth 150, buy order at 42.

https://backpack.tf/stats/Unusual/Pyromancer's Mask/Tradable/Craftable/84 - 1 of 1 Halloween 2014 Pyromancer's, worth nearly 200 keys he's buying for fucking 55

https://backpack.tf/classifieds?item=Blighted Beak&quality=5&tradable=1&craftable=1&australium=-1&particle=38&killstreak_tier=0 - Cloudy Moon Medic Misc worth 320 keys, guess who's buying for over 200 keys off?

It's just buy orders like these that are so horribly low that I feel bad for anybody who would ever take these, and given the hat/effect for some of these like the Ooze it makes me question when these could be considered "quickbuys", not to mention scrap will 100% pay more on each of these.

Some of SexySparta's sell listings in general are also really horrible,

https://backpack.tf/classifieds?item=Taunt: The Schadenfreude&quality=5&tradable=1&craftable=1&australium=-1&particle=3005&killstreak_tier=0 why would I pay 50 keys when I could get this taunt for just 20?

I understand that he is a higher-tier trader but some of these are just so absurdly low and unrealistic that I feel that each of these could easily be considered a shark by anyone with a brain, and god help the poor souls who are willing to pay 50 keys for a Fountain Of Delight taunt or sell a 1 of 1 Halloween misc for over half off...

I also understand that he isn't the only trader who puts up buy orders like these but his are the ones I see the most.

Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated!

No, sharking requires some actual person to person interaction (ex: lying to someone about an item's value).  The buy orders are fine since the seller has to approach the buyer which would mean that the seller understands the buyer is only willing to pay the stated amount.  It's not like the buyer is misrepresenting anything by stating via a buy order that they're only willing to pay X amount.  It's also not like the buyer is going out of their way to prey on new traders.  If someone is seeing these buy orders, that means they're already on bptf so odds are that they can and will check the rest of the classifieds/item pricing.

(and of course on the other side, you can list stuff for whatever price you want, etc.)

I'm going to be posting another thread on my thought's on SexySparta's other service, mannco.trade, and how I also feel that service really pushes the boundaries of "quickbuying".

Any thoughts on this and my next topic would be greatly appreciated!

You should just save yourself the time and not bother writing about his other services. The service isn't quickbuying. We all know the terrible prices, and bot sites have to protect themselves against price drops, etc. You pay them for the convenience; they don't owe you a service, and if you can't find someone paying higher then perhaps their prices are fair.

Not really sure why you're making a forum post (or two) where you're roasting someone for certain practises that are perfectly legal.

Since it's a buy-order, the users who take the offer probably knew what they were doing. And as Vrakos says, he's not mis-representing the price since the buy-order is listed on the same page as the suggested value of the item.
and I don't think it's fair to call out just SexySparta, he is not at all the only one doing this.

As long as he doesn't scam or actually shark someone, he can post whatever price for a buy-order he wants.

Quickselling / buying doesn't have to be a certain discount relative to the current price on backpack.tf. Take the unusual taunts for instance - the ones that were still out of date at like 200+ keys were actually worth way less and probably had buy-orders at 20 keys, I can imagine. Remember, backpack.tf doesn't dictate the actual values of items - the sellers and buyers do.

It’s his choice to list however much he’s buying stuff, if other people decide to actually sell to him (which doesn’t happen often at all with high tiers) it’s their choice. Seems like you learned one of the basic rules of trading though, don’t trade with any high tiers as they love to overpriced and they are smart enough to always make profit off you.

it all depends on your definition of sharking, guess most people here think that sharks could trick and manipulate you, they dont understand that sharks bite and eat everything they smell, mainly noobs selling their stuff. so sure, i would consider it as sharking and absolutely not legit imo, but on this site its legal.

dont get me wrong btw, quickbuyers like r+ubi or zol for example are totally fine, buying low and selling just a bit higher is a fair way to get fast keys on the one or nice deals on the other hand, but margins of 75+% are just disgusting to me :(

Yeah that's definetly a fair point! I think your right about certain unusual's prices being subjective to both the buyers and sellers. However we can't act like ALL prices of backpack are unreasonable, as there is a certain level of fairness within MOST backpack prices, and alot of his buy orders remain extremely low and unreasonable.

That Ooze Pyromancer's for example is worth close to 200 keys, which is decent given the hat/effect, and yet Sparta remains to buy for 73% off. I'm aware that you don't HAVE to sell to them but it's the idea that theres a landmine just waiting to take your Knifestorm Soldier unusual for 70% off?

That wasn't a joke either.

The issue I see with the buy orders is, as others have pointed out, the definition of sharking being relative.

Sharking, imo, is using underhanded tactics (fake/shopped evidence, selective proof, abusing the system, etc.) or manipulation through what you do or don't say. (and there can be a whole discussion on the semantics of manipulation)

In this case, Sparta may be buying incredibly low, however he does not participate in any manipulation. He is literally saying "I am buying at this price", and nothing else.

This is also really true, his buy order's aren't being manipulative, they are just there presenting a price. However, I still do believe there is a level of deception with his buy orders in that every buy order he has out is beaten by Scrap.tf and that almost every one of them are ones that I, and many others, would easily beat, and that's my issue. They serve no purpose but to take advantage of noobs that want to sell their hats to him for very large discounts.

This is in no way sharking, but rather lowballing, and luckily there's no communist regime that forces us to sell for spartas abysmal prices. He's free to offer however low or however high he wants, as is such in a free market. Buy orders are the kind of thing you just put out there saying "ill pay this price" and hope you get lucky, which is why people have so many, its not about offering good prices, its about having enough buy orders that the numbers game goes in your favor.
