Games are better at holding one's attention than most novels, while enabling the player to immerse themselves in the world. Instead of watching someone be the hero, or reading about other's epic quests for treasure, you get to be the main character. You can do so many thing in video games that you cannot do in the current world. Unless nuclear fallout, a zombie uprising, or we live long enough for sci-fi technology to be a reality.
