  • Turbulence in the TF2 Unusual Trading scene

    Erik

Upon request, my insights into the recent turbulence in the TF2 Trading environment:

In TF2 trading, recent events have sent shockwaves through the community. The collapse of gladiator.tf due to a devastating hack (which also hit other website, including in the CS:GO scene) has left many traders in panic and trying to make sense of the new landscape. As a TF2 trader myself, I can give some insights and perspectives on the tf2 unusual market, the recent developments and the future of tf2 (unusual) trading. I hope that this will be interpreted as somewhat optimistic, amidst all the unfortunate news. These are my own takes and opinions and they're not guaranteed to come true obviously. I am primairily an unusual trader, so that should be taken into account.

First and foremost, my sympathies go out to the owner, team, and bot owners of gladiator.tf who were directly impacted by the hack. It's really disheartening to witness the efforts of hardworking and passionate individuals and teams crumble in the face of malicious actions. Traders have used gladiator.tf bots for years as it provided a convenient and reliable platform that hosted these bots. Thanks to these bots, it was possible to set up many buy orders to increase chances of buying an unusual. It allowed traders to set up automatic selling, greatly increasing the efficiency of selling unusuals.

The fallout from this incident has been significant, particularly in the form of a buy order crash. With 300 gladiator bots gone, most of the unusual buy orders have vanished. This has lead to some unrest among unusual traders. Traders heavily reliant on gladiator.tf's buy orders as a benchmark for their trades are now facing the need to reassess their strategies. It's crucial for certain traders to readjust their approach. Relying solely on buy orders may no longer be feasible, and it's essential to base trades on realistic expectations of resale value. However, amidst this short-term turbulence, I remain cautiously optimistic. Profit margins in TF2 trading will likely remain stable, albeit perhaps in a different price range, and traders can take solace in the fact that platforms like marketplace.tf remain unaffected. While the buy order crash is unfortunate, it presents a silver lining – a breathing room in the market. Prices have temporarily dipped, creating an opportunity for traders to acquire unusuals at lower prices and potentially increase their profit margins in the long run. It's important to remember that TF2 trading is a resilient ecosystem. It existed before gladiator.tf and will continue to exist in its absence, given the current circumstances at least. Moreover, the recent openings of marketplace whitelist applications provides a ray of hope for traders seeking a solid, trustworthy, and stable platform to sell their items. Backpack.tf itself also remains available as a solid platform to buy and sell unusuals.

In conclusion, while recent events have certainly rattled the TF2 trading community, I firmly believe that it will thrive in the long run (assuming current circumstances) and that there will be plenty of opportunities for traders to make a profit. Although the collapse of gladiator.tf is undoubtedly a setback, it also opens up a window opportunity for traders to reasses and readjust their strategies and potentially increase profit margins in a ''new'' unusual market. By staying informed, adapting to the changing landscape and making smart use of reliable trading platforms, I think TF2 traders can face the future with confidence. As long as TF2 exists, and as long as people play the game, and those people are looking for unusuals to wear... trading will continue to exist. Tracing back to the core: supply and demand.

Once again, I extend my sympathies to the gladiator.tf team and bot owners who were all hit by this tragic attack. It's very unfortunate to see such a vibrant and kind community get hit by a hack. I hope there will some sort form of justice. In the mean time the only thing we can do is reasses and adjust our trading strategies, while remaining optimistic and looking at the future.

Edit as of 2024: this article now contains certain inaccuracies, for instance, Gladiator.TF has (succesfully) relaunched! The main point here still stands however. I will not be editing any of the content so it will still reflect my thoughts at that time.

Thats the only response needed to any one of these “events” lol.

Bot owners should have known better after the first attack. Fool me once as the saying goes.

As long as 2 players are still playing tf2, one of them is gonna want the others hat.

This is an unfortunate situation for all affected, Erik. I wish nothing but the best to the gladiator.tf team and bot owners.
