cleverpun
As title; what are the best workshop items/mods to install with Skyrim? I don't have any DLC, my GPU is decent, and I've never played an Elder Scrolls game before. Explaining your recommendation and linking to it will be a lot more helpful than just typing the name ;P No real preferences, just please no "silly" mods--I actually want to enjoy the game, so Id rather not have any mlp mounts or teletubby zombies or anything like that
The G What ™
Have you tried playing it without any mods first? Bethesda games generally rely on their immersive environments and expansive areas.

Darklunerninja
If your PC can handle it I would recommend some of the texture overhaul mods. The vanilla game can look boring at times and some of the textures are trash. If you can run Skyrim on Max settings you shouldn't have too much trouble, just run a few mods at a time to make sure they don't conflict with each other. The guy above also has a good point, Nexus does have a better selection of mods and installing is easy.

Hence why I won't be installing "silly" mods like MLP horses or Thomas the Tank Engine dragons. actually, I probably should've put that in the OP P:

JCsquared
http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/19281/? IMO this is the only way to play skyrim, coming from someone who had it on console since release, and got it on PC a year ago, it does make the game a lot harder though so be forewarned. http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9286/? This is more like vanilla game on steroids, and isn't as hard as requiem, and is still superior to the vanilla game, compatibility is much more of a pain with this one though.
