Military

How do you feel about your respective country's military? Do you support them? Do you disagree with them? Why?

Also serious answers please. I'm genuinely curious as to how others feel about this.

Coming from USA, I support and admire our servicemen/women. I plan on joining the Navy. ^^

They lay their lives on the line for everyone in our country (America) no matter the challenge, even though some here do not deserve to be defended with such valor. Support and respect!

They fight to help each other out in the field. They fight for the men and women next to them, so that their brethren back home can live in peace and harmony. Respect fully due.

The leaders on the other hand... can go F**k themselves. (U.S.)

I support them.

But god damn government doesn't even put enough cash for their equipment and needs.

In the fight in Zamboanga they didn't have enough to eat. Thank God for the residence though for giving them food.

I think our military should be abolished. We can't defend ourselves and all we do is cause chaos (Iraq/Afghanistan). But the soldiers are doing well but with these cuts and dumb politicians its better to keep them home than to make them risk their lives with inferior equipment. And since we're surrounded by allies most of whom have way more men and better equipment there is no use for our army. Save the money, use it to lower taxes to save the economy

Tbh here (Ireland) we may as well go without an army; our army is so small it'd make much more sense to just let them take us over peacefully.

Are the IRA still active?

I do not support our military (Norway).

I don't like the concept of a military, where you are taught to not think for your self and submit yourself to your leaders. Maybe even give your life for them. I also really don't see any practical use for our military. It's been 70 years since enemy soldiers set foot on our land, and I can't imagine it will ever happen again.

On top of that we helped invade Afghanistan and other countries through NATO, which I will always condemn them for.

Haha, firstly the ®IRA is a banned organisation in this country and the UK (which includes Northern Ireland). At the moment South of the border, no it is not active whatsoever. However in the North it is still active, but there hasn't been any serious (3+ people killed) attacks up there in a long time. It's very small, too. Also most of them are no longer "terrorists" as much as they are "politicians". It's a somewhat difficult situation but it's really been defused quite a lot in the last 17-18 years.

The Military means something different in different countries.  Nations like the Netherlands or Noway seem not to need them because of their mutual defense agreement with NATO and would also seem useless as they would not stop any large force by themselves.  In other countries, authoritarian dictatorships, the military is used to control the populace or is often the best option for people trying to make a living.  This leaves those militaries filled with people who have less interest in thier nations defense or protecting the people.  Militaries are simply not the same.  In the USA we have a global military aimed at keeping an international situation that fosters an environment that will facilitate global trade and general peace.  That is actually in our nation's best interest.  With out global trade we would suffer economically to the point that it would be very detrimental.  Sadly, the Western Europeans are acting in their best interest by not engaging Russia with a stronger hand then they have.  At least thats what they believe.  I do not believe this is true.

Russia needs Western Europe as much as they need Russia but Europe's behavior allows Russia to believe that it is a more relevant state than it actually should be.  By not being stronger against Russia you give them a bigger say in your affairs and you weaken your own positions.

Well we don't want to protect our country apparently since we don't want to spend money on it. And any decent sized military could annihilate ours in a few days. And those UN missions weren't any useful lately

I can see your argument about "70 years since enemy soldiers set foot on our land", but your argument about "not liking the concept of a military" is wrong. If allowing people to "think for themselves" and plan their own actions lead to fewer casualties, and a higher victory rate, then why don't we do that? Coordination leads to the best results.

Maybe a poor formulation from my side, but you misinterpreted what I tried to say. There are many more reasons as to why I don't like the military. One of them is how you are drafted into it and then doctrinated with, and forced to follow a given mindset. Remember that over here at least (I don't know about the rest of the world), every man is drafted into the military.

Speaking of "higher victory rates"? It's not like a video game. People die for real in these things. No-one "wins".
