It's kinda like if you lost your wallet, and some person found it and gave it back. How differently would you feel if the person gave it back with everything in it compared to the person saying he will keep half of it? Making someone give something back just leaves a bad impression for the person who lost it.

Judging by the fact that the hat is even in his profile picture, I'd say add him, and ask him if he scrapped it on purpose. If he says yes, then keep it. If he says no, then give it back for free. That's what I would do.

When i was young, I would steal lots of stuff- and i mean lots. 

The thing is i'd always give it back at the end without being asked to- i just liked to steal for the sake of stealing, not for the sake of personal gain.

I think you should give it back. Set an example for the community.
