How Do People Get Steam Points That They Sell For Keys?

I am well aware of how the steam points system works but ive come across a number of accounts that sell huge amounts of points for really cheap, like 13k points for 1 key. Im just curious how that is even possible, do they have a means of getting points another way or do they just have tons stock piled that they sell?

probably posting meme reviews/guides/discussion posts that get reactions

I've seen shit in the discussion forums like "PETITION TO REMOVE JOKER REACT" get 600+ joker reacts, and that's just free steam points.

I've dealt with some account lock stuff in the past regarding gifting an "unusual amount" of games to my friends. Legitimately my account is banned from gifting now. Was extremely frustrated at first but I've let it go now. I actually did some digging and in my 11 years on steam I've gifted a grand total of 67 games to friends. To me that seems super reasonable and non-suspicious especially because many of the games are gifted to the same three friends, my core 4 group.

Insane that my account has faced a permanent restriction for something they deemed risky to their platform, yet somehow others are getting away with gifting THIRTEEN THOUSAND ($130 spent...) of points for $1.75 and somehow turning a profit. Can you imagine how much spending they have to be doing to be able to afford that deal? Surely all of it is legitimate spending.. surely...
I won't even factor in the loss they take during sending points via reactions/awards. But it's just crazy how they can be so dialed in on certain things and then obviously so blindsided towards the legitimate threatening fraud on their platform.

I've actually sold some steam points here and there for keys. I got them from buying games. I personally don't see the appeal, but I'm not using them. They would want like some steam sticker or smth for their profile. I'd reward it to them. Either way, can't hurt to put them to good use and get some kick back.

It's possible that they made a lot of in-game purchases (particularly investing in old CS operations and majors), and had a lot of points sitting around. I've still got around 1 million split across accounts that I haven't bothered to do anything with.

But also as another commenter mentioned, there are people who make ragebait posts on the steam forums to farm them, or use stolen accounts to give out the points.

You guys are all overlooking something. You get a fuck ton when/if you buy a steam deck. I never bothered selling them. Just bought out the shops and gave a ton of awards.

Points are free. You arnt buying the game or w/e to get points. Some people see selling points as a way to make games cheaper.

Points are just kinda there, I give them away for free to friends bc they are pretty worthless.

67 doesn't even seem very high... I've gifted hundreds of games to people I know, and I've never been locked.

But its very easy to accumulate steam points if you either A: spend a lot of money on microtransactions (e.g. people who buy from tf2 ingame shop on sale to resell items, people who buy keys to unbox with), or B: just buy a lot of games via steam. I've earned 277,000 points from buying through the steam store, as I buy a lot of games for myself and friends/family. Given they can only be spent on community items like backgrounds and avatar frames, and the fact that you only need like 10-20k to fully set up your profile, its no surprise people are sitting on tons of unspent points.

i remember there were exploits before that generated an insane amount of steam points, I wouldn't be surprised if these people capitalized on them.

How do you even convert steam points to money? Anything you buy with them is unmarketable

You can purchase seasonal badges to level up your steam profile. People want steam levels for friend ship slots and clout.

you tell me you want 40k steam points for a price we agree on, you pay then I award you spending 80k steam points and you get the 40k in a few days.

Getting a large amount of points sometimes just happens, at this point I just buy anything I want from the points store or just gift to friends.
