Steamrep is shutting down

As you may be aware, it has now been announced that steamrep will be closing down, with reports closing effective immediately and the API shutting down sometime next year. You can read about the shutdown plans here and ask any questions you have for steamrep staff here.

The biggest immediate implication for backpack.tf is around our rules for trading with scammers, so I have made a separate thread for discussion of that here.

As for the impact of the steamrep shutdown more generally, I'm sure people will have questions and comments. The API will remain in place until June 2025, and we will continue to use it for the forseeable future. When the API shuts down, steamrep will be providing a data dump of banned and caution tags, but all associated evidence will be discarded. The thinking as of now is that Jesse plans to integrate the steamrep data into rep.tf, but that backpack.tf will move to simply displaying a link to rep.tf for information only. We do not plan to continue to auto-ban accounts with previous steamrep tags or to ban for trading with them once the steamrep API has been shutdown, as we feel that a ban list that cannot be appealed is not justifiable. We have some time to consider other options and cement our decision here, though, so we welcome user input here too.

Feel free to use this thread to give any opinions and input you have on the future of backpack.tf or trading more generally, outside of the trading with scammers rule. You can also just use this thread to complain and/or rejoice as you wish.

Time to revert back to the best method of reputation checking: counting the number of +reps & -reps in a user's comment section :)

why is it shutting down?

That info is in the steamrep thread linked in the first post, it's a bit much to go over again here.

Could you elaborate more on what this means? Wording isn't too clear

Does this apply to all bans starting from now, June 29th 2024, or will this only start taking effect once the API shuts down in June 2025?

Does this only apply to new steamrep bans from unresolved reports that are going to be looked at until 2024 ends?

How about appealing? Suppose someone, marked on SR, fails to submit an appeal on the SR forums by July 13. Would they be able to appeal their ban on backpacktf's grounds? Or would they only be able to after the API shutdown in 2025?

Once the steamrep api shuts down, backpack.tf will no longer automatically ban people for having a steamrep tag but no backpack ban. Like https://backpack.tf/u/76561197960469163

Neither. We can not process appeals for tags applied by SR. We can only process appeals for tags applied by BPTF

After the API shuts down they will automatically be unbanned from backpack unless they get banned by us aswell

Use steamhistory.net instead. It's better in my opinion and even includes sourcebans and previous Alias's. Don't sweat

I'm finally gonna outlive all 3 organizations related to my ban / caution. Time truly does heal all wounds.

should we as a community be concerned?

I'm not really sure how to answer this, I can't really dictate that for you. You can use this thread to express concerns if you do have them, and we can discuss.

im just glad that the scammers who are banned will still have their tags and reports archived for the public. a scammer of mine still lurks around but is suffering it heavily, heh

reports archived

Pretty sure the only thing being archived is the tags and possibly admin notes (whatever those are). Unless a third party does it (which also sounds like they are making hard to do).

Quote
  • At the end of year, forum will be discarded, no backups made.

A backup dump of all bans will be published for the community to use as they see fit after that time.

  • BANNED and CAUTION tags will be preserved.
  • We are evaluating the practicality of preserving public notes (Additional Info from Admins), and may include this in the backup alongside BANNED and CAUTION tags.
  • All Private notes, evidence, and anything else not specified here, will be discarded.

To be honest Steam Rep in the recent years had some tough situations. They were just too slow to act. Even still I think this was the right call in shutting down.

Solution to what? I mean what this displays is steam bans and sourcebans, so it's mostly unrelated to what steamrep did. I'd use a combination of things for checking rep, that site can give you some info, rep.tf can give you some other info.

As jh said, the only thing that will be archived is ban/caution tag status and possibly public profile notes. All forum reports, evidence, and mod notes will be discarded.

Fortress of Gamers or F-o-G. I was issued the tag through them because they were a Steamrep affiliate and Angelmander was a mod for their community.
