PayPal account permanently closed?

Emmy!

Recommended Posts

I started a PayPal account a few days ago to cash out, and after selling around $9500 USD worth of stuff, I got an email saying my PayPal account is being permanently closed for potentially fraudulent/high-risk activity.

I'm currently abroad, but based in the UK. Has anyone else had any experience with this? How do you resolve this?

Talking with Paypal customer support seems to be the first step.

I did, they said their decision is final and have remained unresponsive since.

Super useful in explaining my current situation. Unfortunately my account was limited - I was able to receive money but not withdraw.

Any experience in how to resolve this with customer support?

This is why I use venmo/zelle/cashapp. I had my pp account shut down once and I couldn't get my money back until I waited 6 months.

Did you get the full amount back?

yeah, after 6 months tho lol. Your situation might be different tho. I wasn't 18 at the time so technically I was not allowed to use pp. I suspect they lock your funds for so long so that if there actually is fraud and someone tries to chargeback they can get their money back.

As a fairly avid cash trader. Here are a few pointers I have:

  1. Have you fully verified your identity, bank account and address with PayPal?
This is typically done so that you can transfer unlimited funds and get rid of the 2500 EUR calendar year restriction for receiving funds
  2. Are you positive it is "permanently closed", if so, then that's a different alert to what wxsp is talking about which is a PayPal account being "locked" and you must provide additional information to verify your identity as above?
My underage PayPal account was locked for over 2 years with about $30 inside it. I never cared for the extra money and just left my account restricted for that period of time, provided my legal documents after I turned 18 and they unrestricted it, let me withdraw the funds and asked me to make a new account with a new email address. That new PayPal is now fully verified and I've got probably over $10,000 in transactions since last September on it now.
(Note: With absolutely no hassle from PayPal whatsoever, so long as you play by their rules, it's all good. I verified my identity when I sent a payment over $3000 on a new card, and both PayPal and my bank contacted me to ask if it was a fraudulent payment. Once it was sorted out, things have been going very smooth sailing since - https://prnt.sc/1ewdp2m)
  3. Realistically, it does look extremely fraudulent on PayPal's side to have a butt ton of money appear from essentially nowhere. If your account is new, that can also contribute to flags being alerted over at PayPal HQ.
So long as no one chargebacks you, you are probably good to talk it out with Support, they can be reached inside PayPal's website and customer service, or alternatively, reach out to them on Twitter and ask them to give you a phone number you can call. I've resolved issues using this method in the past. So long as you are pretty well explained, I'm sure the misunderstandings can be cleared up

Best of luck cheef,

aj

I got my account frozen for 3 months for a 20k USD transaction. They too said it was permanent but I would file a new ticket each week until my account was unlocked again. Ever since I have not kept any money on PayPal, I transfer to my bank right away because they are aware that I sometimes sell goods, whether digital or tangible and they have never given me a hard time about anything.

Best of luck getting your account back and don't leave your cash sitting there ever again.

There used to be a really good Paypal video on YouTube on fixing a frozen account but it seems to have gone Private.  They had a similar situation as you so they had to go through the CFPB to get there funds back.

What is the exact reason they have given for closing your account? What is the wording?

Continue to demand recourse from them.

If they do not give a response, or no recourse is given without good reason, start a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, it is free.  Paypal is a US Company and must comply with these people.  usually you will get a response within 15 days and they contact Paypal directly.

Video below might help you.

Anyway best of luck to you, don't give up.
