How much do Macaw Masked "gems" go for? I have a FN strange one

Hello bp.tf community,

I have a FN strange Macaw Masked scattergun that's fully green (with just a tiny tinge of blue). I know that some people collect these "gems" (like blue gems in CSGO, where the pattern on a knife is by chance >90% blue) but how much do people usually pay for these?

From what I can recall, green gem is the least rare of them all, but strange FN and one colour will still fetch a decent amount. As for pricing, I'm not too sure myself but: https://steamcommunity.com/id/fearts/ might have a decent idea; however they do seem to be selling their paints for very high prices. Green is the most common. All white/All yellow are the two most rare colorways. All depends on how much a person wants it!

Can anyone explain this stuff to me? I've been around TF2 for a long ass time but don't know jack about skins. What is this green/yellow/white you guys are mentioning?

We're talking about the Macaw Masked warpaint, which has 5 distinct colors in its base texture (https://imgur.com/b8STo0q), orange, drab brownish-green, yellow, emerald green, and blue. Each warpaint has a random seed that dictates which part of the texture will be used, so a macaw masked weapon will have some combination of those colors. Most macaws have several different random colors but rarely, it will be fully a single color in which case it's considered a "gem" (this terminology comes from CSGO knives which also have a chance to be fully one color, usually blue [i.e. blue gem], depending on the skin). Yellow gem macaws are very rare because the yellow part of the texture is tiny, and white macaws are the rarest.

 

Green is the most common 'gem' because there's 2 shades of green in the texture, but they're different enough that you can tell which shade is which. I think the green on mine looks better than the other one imo
