twoseven Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 I'm not trying to sound like a hipster douche bag here, but I honestly don't understand why Burning Flames is seen as the most valuable/profitable unusual effect. I can agree that its among the flashiest of all the effects, but if you ask me, its not even close to the coolest. If someone could shed some light on this, that'd be greeeeaaaaat. I promise I'm not a hipster.

Burning Flames is very noticeable, while Nuts n' Bolts and Orbiting Planets are the cheapest due to their visibility. When you buy an unusual, you want it to be seen so yeah.

Its pretty much always been burning > beams/scorching, with scorching taking more of a lead over beams in the last year or so.

I bought it on an impulse and ended up selling it later on at a 2.5 bud loss to me because I couldn't stand looking at the effect any more. Burning isn't that great. It looks really fake and stupid. IMO, Burning Flames is highly overrated. Oddly enough, most people will even tell you straight out that they think scorching is better. Scorching seems to be much more popular than burning, but is much less expensive. Now personally, i don't like scorching either. I think it's too "loud" (bright neon green) and dumb looking. There are two reasons why I think burning is considered one of the best effects. The first reason is maturity. Most of the people playing the game don't have too much of it. The second and probably biggest reason is convention. Very early on, burning flames, sunbeams and scorching flames were all established as the top effects. Burning ended up coming out in the lead. This is because there were several very wealthy people within the TF2 trading community that were willing to pay top dollar for burning flames unusuals. Some of these guys are still around and active today. It's also been passed around that a burning flames team captain is the most expensive unusual for very long time, even though that's changed and is no longer true and people who don't even like the team captain will still tell you it's the most expensive hat because that's what they heard (basically I'm also saying that the team captain is way overpriced for the same reason that burning is overpriced). So even though there are now several much nicer effects than burning, and the tastes of the playerbase have shifted a great deal, burning continues to cling to that high value range. It also doesn't help matters much that it's a 1st generation effect, so people are able to continue demanding outrageous prices for it. tl;dr, burning sucks and is getting a free ride mostly from stupidity and reputation
