SmerboTheFleeb
I know you're supposed to stay away from robot hats or ugly looking hats but how do I know which ones to go for?
ChrisPy Bacon
Ones that people want to trade for- one that has sales. Ones with gen 1 effects or new holiday effects are usually good investments. If you really want to make a bold move, spelled hats are always a choice. hyro
that boils down to experience tbf altho the effect plays a big role. I wouldn't invest in 1st,2nd,3rd gens cuz they are so many of them in existance and still more to come obviously they will sell eventually but there are way better option on the market than some 1st gen hats robo/eotl/halloween are the most desired ones. You'll eventually catch on which hats/effects sell easly and which ones don't
hyro
altho I will say that if you find a decent looking 2nd gen hat for a good price that is 1of1 on the market its an easy sell
Flamadin
1. Overall rarity 2. Rarity of hat combo available, very hard to profit when 5 of that hat are already for sale 3. Any kind of unusual misc is super desirable. People love doubling or tripling their displayed effects. 4. Slightly uncommon effects. Become an expert as to which kind of hats, that you can afford, actually sell. For example nuts and bolts is not great, but on an engie hat or a robo hat, is pretty good. Pollen
Working on a tier list now. Should be done soon
Pollen
Here is a basic tiers list or Guide. Some unusual effects also depend greatly on which hats they are on. For example, the Scream Fortress X effects can all be considered Mid-High tier, as long as the effect isn't on a hat from the same case. If it is, then the hat is still unboxable. In this case, any of the Scream Fortress X effects can be considered Low, or Mid-Low tier. This tier list will generally be taking the effects in their best case scenarios. Note that this guide doesn't cover Unusual Taunt or Weapon effects. Also note that the effects within tiers are in no specific order. Halloweens (Highest/God Tier) : It’s a Secret to Everybody Harvest Moon Cloudy Moon Stormy 13th Hour Misty Skull Bonzo The All-Gnawing Knifestorm Darkblaze Hellfire Demonflame Arcana Spellbound Chiroptera Venenata Poisoned Shadows Something Burning This Way Comes High Tier: Nebula Sunbeams Burning Flames / Scorching Flames Green Black Hole / Time Warp Anti-Freeze /Roboactive Frostbite Purple Energy / Green Energy Death at Dusk Morning Glory Amaranthine Stare From Beyond Ooze Haunted Phantasm Jr. Ghastly Ghosts Jr. I'm going to break up the Mid tier into Mid-High and Mid-Low because these are where most of the effects in the game reside. Mid-High Tier: Fragmented Gluons Fragmented Photons Fragmented Quarks Snowfallen Snowblinded Frozen Icefall Fifth Dimension Vicious Vortex Abyssal Aura Menacing Miasma Mystical Medley Twisted Radiance Ethereal Essence Ghastly Grove Wicked Wood The Eldritch Opening The Dark Doorway Galactic Gateway Brain Drain Head of Steam Open Mind Eldritch Flame Tesla Coil Death by Disco Ancient Eldritch Eldritch Flame Ether Trail It's a mystery to everyone It's a puzzle to me Nether Trail Eerie Orbiting Fire Starstorm Insomnia Starstorm Slumber Vicious Circle White Lightning Ring of Fire Abduction Mid-Low Tier: Neutron Star Sulphurous Phosphorus Power Surge Electrostatic Disco Beat Down Cloud 9 Miami Nights Sparkling Lights Violet Vortex Valiant Vortex Verdant Vortex Omniscient Orb Pyroland Daydream Fragmenting Reality Refragmenting Reality Defragmenting Reality Cauldron Bubbles Flaming Lantern Molten Mallard Low Tier: Galactic Codex Ancient Codex Voltaic Hat Protector Electric Hat Protector Magnetic Hat Protector Subatomic Atomic Blizzardy Storm Stormy Storm Circling TF Logo Circling Peace Sign Circling Heart Haunted Ghosts Vivid Plasma Searing Plasma Orbiting Fire Purple Confetti Green Confetti Orbiting Planets Terror-Watt Kill-a-Watt Memory Leak Overclocked Steaming Smoking Bubbling Massed Flies Aces High Dead Presidents Nuts and Bolts Tiers Unknown / To be determined: Aromatica Chromatica Prismatica Verdatica Kaleidoscope Wandering Wisps Smoldering Spirits Frisky Fireflies Bee Swarm

Just look how much they are dropping in price Scorching and Burning are still in the top 25 effects when sorted by price, they are still high tier. On certain hats they can definitely be considered Mid tier, but for example on a misc or nice hat these are still very desirable effects.
Nikspy
If you're looking for a hat to sell off for profit, it's best if you stay in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gen effects, but if you have lots of money spend, and are looking to keep, or sell a hat for a super high price, go for End of the Line effects, Halloween effects, and other event ones, those often look better anyway. I personally prefer the EOTL effects. But my personal philosophy is to avoid robo hats, heavy hats, and hats with nuts and bolts, and massed flies, anything sells better than those.
