Is buying unusuals (cheap) from Marketplace.tf cheaper than buying keys and trading for the unusual?

check the cash price of the unusual you're interested in 

 

then find someone selling the same unusual for keys (on classifieds or whatever), take that value and multiply it by the current price of keys in cash for its value in cash

 

then it depends on which one is lower which would be the one you would go for

Marketplace keys are cheaper than Steam Community Market sometimes, plus no 7 day trade holds when you buy, so there's that. And no do your calculations and see if buying that certain unusual is cheaper in MP or with pure.

Generally buying in keys tends to be cheaper, but it does vary from item to item

 a lot of the time the unusuals listed on mp.tf actually have lower buyouts listed in keys on classifieds. a lot of traders actually add 5 or 10% to the cash price to make up for the mp.tf tax that is taken off the transaction. but depends on the person and situation.
