Slam
If you want something that will perform a little bit slower in only a few games but match or beat it in many, the R5 3600. (3600x if you refuse to overclock) - they come at 160-220 USD so they're significantly cheaper than the asking price of the 7700k during its height. A few intel favored games will still have the 3600/3600x a bit behind but if you can seriously notice the difference between 90 and 93 fps or 155 and 160 in an fps game, then you must be superhuman. However afaik in most games the 3600/3600x will match the 7700k unless you've got a fucking hell of an overclock on the 7700k, which will make it only a bit faster for much worse thermal performance. Take note if you wanna save money, look for B450 motherboards that say on Newegg/Amazon that they're updated to support Ryzen 3000 series out of the box. Make sure you get 3200 mhz or higher speed RAM if the ddr4 you have isnt already that high (it makes less of a difference on Ryzen 3000 series but in the 1000 and 2000 series faster RAM made the CPU run way better.) The stock Ryzen 5 cooler will keep it cool as long as you don't overclock much. A cheap aftermarket air cooler will do perfectly fine with overclock. My Ryzen 5 1600 with a Hyper 212 Evo with the thermal paste it came with never goes above 60-65 degrees (F) with a decent overclock after 2+ hours of heavy use. mb_
3600X as 6 core budget variant or 3700X as 8c performance variant (i got 3700X for my rig - great CPU for money).
