ChrisPy Bacon
How did these items come to be? What kind of glitches caused the existence of these monstrosities?
FP jh34ghu43gu
Australiums found the day after an update(s) dropped as strange unique. Some normals came from manipulating stockpile crates like normal bat, pretty sure some very few others came from when valve used to duped items and messed up the item quality code. Don't remember what made strange uniques.
Freak4ever2000™
Normal Bats Normal Bats were the outcome of a crate glitch with the stockpile crate. The stockpile crate generates a 4 items - set depending on what "seed" or "code" you type into the box. After a few months / years, one of the items in those item sets was removed from either the game or the lootpool, and lazy development forgot to completely redo the seed system. Since Tf2s itemsystem runs like any other computersystem too, everything that defines an item is set with "hex" numbers n shit. The hexnumber "0" that defines the quality of said item translates to "normal" and the items hexnumber "0" is a stock bat. The system had no idea what the fuck it should put instead of the removed item, so it went with Quality: 0 Item: 0. The outcome was a a Normal Bat. Strange Normal Weapons / Australiums A short glitch that happened during tough break, were all strange variants of certain drop areas would become Strange Normal items instead of the usual Strange variant. The glitch was fixed very soon, so only 3-4 australiums and a couple strange normal items were ever created. I think Unique Stranges and Unique strange australiums were a similar story to the normal stranges, but i dont really know the story behind that. Normal items in general Most normal items besides the Normal Bat were the outcome of underpaid support workers granting scammed items to victims. They kinda slipped up during the "what quality did the item have" questions, and so they kinda forgot to include that and granted normal variants of the items. Thats how the normal Yellow belt, Normal Frying Pan, Normal Black Rose and Normal Ellis cap were created. Oddity Collectors and item historians please correct me if im wrong on some of those origins! Buddy
Strange uniques were an uncrate glitch.

Most of this was correct but a few minor corrections. Normal Bats - Normal Bats were some of the oldest glitched items, the stockpile crate glitch which you mentioned did create most of the Normal Bats, but it was far more recent and not responsible for some of the oldest ones. Strange Normal Weapons / Australiums - They were from the Gun Mettle Update, not the Tough Break Update. The glitch actually lasted a fair while, like 22 hours, only 7 weapons (and their Australium varients) were effected so you had to open the right crate and get the right unbox or get the right Australium drop to get one. Strange Unique Weapons / Australiums were basically the same, except it was every weapon and unlike the 22 hours it took to fix the Gun Mettle glitches, this was patched in like half an hour. Normal items in general - I wouldn't say "underpaid support workers" because to my knowledge Steam Support is not outsourced nor is it a separate department within Valve. Unless something has changed in recent years. Basically Steam Support is (was?) the collective duty of all Valve employees, including Gaben himself. For all that is known it might have been Gaben behind the keyboard messing up the item restoration that created one of these Normal items. Also you missed Normal Batsabers. They were unboxable in Normal quality for a day or two after Invasion launched.
