Pumpkin
Some guy added me with a profile that seemed to legit to be a scam account with lots of tf2 items, 500 hours in tf2 and lots of friends, groups, and games. He added me on steam saying "I decided to give you my $150 and I'm going to use my Paypal account to send the money on your account" and I instantly knew it was a scam. His account seems too expensive to be a scamming alt so this has gotten me confused. He asked for my discord and I gave it to him and when we started talking he sent me the following image saying "okay here as you can see that it only needs your steam account name so I can directly send the money on your account and right after you will give me your steam account name I will be showing you my screen so you will able to see that I'm about to send the money on your account" so, of course, I tried to mess with him for a bit. After wasting his time for a while he figured I wasn't gonna fall for the scam so he turned aggressive and stopped talking to me. My main question is what kind of scam is this? I don't think a scammer could do much with just your username but I played it safe and didn't give him shit. Do you think later down the road he would have asked for my password or something? This scam just seems super weird in my opinion. The image he sent me of the "Paypal Payment Option" to send the money directly to a steam account
Cole Phelps
Lmaoo I actually fell for that, yeah he already has your password once he got your steam account name. All he needs is your steam guard code to "Verify" the payment crap and then the dude instantly unlogs everything. He tried again when I got an unusual but this time he threatened me with bullshit and he just got stressed instead. Also that legit account is probably an account he already hacked, because I got hacked from a steam friend list just to then say he got hacked 2 days later. Thank god I didn't lose anything when I fell for it for the first time, I was so broke yet he still went for me.

Unless you went onto a site which was provided by the scammer via a link. Only way passwords can be obtained is by social engineering or phishing. They cannot be gleaned from a username alone

Most likely photoshopped, or edited in some way, but no, paypal doesnt have that option to 'send money to someone elses steam account'. Its all a ploy to scam you. If you were to use inspect element instead, there's absolutely no mistakes that are traceable from a screenshot as it simply takes the current webpage's layout and changes features within it - keeping the exact same size, position, color and font. In any case, it would be both harder and impractical to use photoshop in this situation, since even if the victim wanted you to refresh the page in a gif to prove it's real, both photoshop and inspect element cannot be used as it would be impossible. In any case, there's definitely no reason to use photoshop over inspect element in this case.

D.Alex
Yes, apparently this continues with scammer asking for your Steam Guard Code (screen from this report). However, I believe they still need your Steam account password and not sure under what pretense they ask for it.
