Minecraft Modding Forge

I used to mod minecraft using the forge API. The last time I worked on my mod was minecraft 1.4.2 I believe and I was having problems getting my mob to render in-game.

Then Minecraft updated to 1.5 or 1.6 and they changed the way textures work to where each item/block has its own texture file.

I figured this would mean I had to take my current 16x16 texture files and make them into 264 separate files each.

I sort of quit my mod out of frustration from that and the fact that I still cant get my genie to render.

I want to get back into modding again but minecraft is in 1.7.2 gamma right now and I have no idea what has happened.

Questions:

  • Has Mojang released the official modding API?
  • Can someone tell me how to get my genie to render?
  • Is forge still compatible with minecraft?
  • Do I need to change anything in my current code to fit the updates?
  • Does minecraft support translucent textures?
  • Does forge (if compatible) have anything new that I NEED to know about?

Note: I use eclipse as my java sdk tool.

If you know the answer to any of these questions I request that you add me on steam*.

Thanks.
