Friend wants to build a PC.

Recommended Posts

Does he want any specific type of case? ex: tempered glass, good ventilation, quietness?

also if he does want tempered glass on his pc does he want rgb components?

what games is he going to be playing? if he wants to play something like monster hunter on the highest graphics, you'd need something a bit beefier like a 1080ti to a 2070, but that's with the highest settings, if he's playing lower end games or indie games, ex: we need to go deeper, don't starve, binding of Isaac, or even TF2 on certain settings, you might want a cheaper graphics card,

there's a lot to think about when making a computer,

I hope this helped you grasp how hard designing a computer can be.

This is time for me

Build

Reasons for parts

CPU - 8700k is about as good as it gets for gaming

MOBO - The Z390 Aorus comes with great VRM's for OC'ing and a wifi card :)

COOLER - H100i is one of the best CPU coolers out there, and will allow for OC'ing potential

RAM - DDR4-3000 is all that is needed for gaming, plus the RGB

STORAGE - SSD's are needed in all pc's and the NVME will allow for a really snappy system and the SATA could be a game library

GPU - RTX 2080 is the best GPU that fits this budget and EVGA is one of THE BEST customer service companies out there.

PSU - Again EVGA and customer service, fully modular psu with plenty of power and 80+ gold rated.

CASE - Completely up to you but the meshify c is one of the coolest cases imo and makes building a breeze, also has great airflow.
OS - Just get one online for like 20$

IMO The Z390 board is overkill for the 8700K. Gimme a sec.

You can swap out the RGB fans for the standard ML fans he wants. These are the units with the PWM board headers and a separate header to go to the lighting node.

z390 Should not be overkill. 9700k is a pointless upgrade imo. You lose hyperthreading.

Only using the z390 board because I did not find a z370 board with the same features for less.

Sure thing. If he wants to add RGB fans later, he can buy em later. This isn't the cheapest I could get, but it's certainly close.

8 normal cores with higher clocks and better thermal interface are better than six hyper-threaded cores with none of the former.

Highly doubtful how well that equates to real world performance. Real world perf in games is 5-7 fps at stock clocks at 1080p. Of course you're not going to run these cpus stock though. My 8700k overclocked to 5ghz is sitting at 43 degrees right now while playing overwatch. Obviously OP's friend will have a nice enough system to play all 1440p games max above 60fps for sure, and be able to handle 4k gaming, so the difference will be even less noticeable there. I wouldn't sacrifice an extra 16gb of ram or a better gpu because such a difference.

EDIT: You also lose the option to delid. The 9700k has a crappy solder job, so a delidded 8700k will still be cooler.

Im confused why his is cheaper when he has a 9700k in the build?

(Looks like he halfed the ram to 16gb, which i dont even think he needs but yeah)

ah 2070 vs 2080, and his is only like $70 cheaper. I mean 8700k vs 9700k or 2070 vs 2080. I think you go for the 8700k and 2080 over 9700k and 2070 right?

The 9700k is only 4% better anyway https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-9700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-8700K/4030vs3937

You could eliminate the difference by getting the same case as his. But by doing that, you lose cable management ease, etc. But at a 2k budget, I strongly recommend getting your favorite case. When your friend gets his system, I can help him with an overclock.

I haven't looked into the case you linked, but will he need some extra case fans? Like on his build? Just curious on cooling

The common sentiment in the gaming industry is that hyperthreading is moot unless you are streaming or recording gameplay. Games will always benefit from more physical cores versus processing threads.

I can back up some of that with my own personal testing. I have a twin-socket LGA2011 server with Xeon E5-2660 CPUs. If I turn off hyperthreading (assign no more than one thread per core on the VM) I get a score of 1350 on Cinebench.

If I do 16 core / 32 threads it jumps to 1650.

The price premium is not worth the Hyperthreading. Go ahead and jump up to the 8-core. It's slightly more money for a far better chip.

Also, more fans means you have better cooling capacity at lower noise levels. You can change it out for whatever fans he wants. Just know that the case supports 140/120 fans on the front and top, and 120 on the rear.

Yeah, I can wholeheartedly agree with you that the 9700k is definitely the best cpu for gaming. It all comes down to if OP's friend believes 30 bucks is worth 3-5%. Far better is quite an overstatement though imo.

I thought it had more fans included when I looked at it, but it does not. My mistake. It has two 120mm fans, which I would place at the front.(Yes, this case supports bottom mounted fans, but no rear fan). Have your friend buy some nice corsair, be quiet, or noctua fans to place on the bottom intakes.
