MasterMinder
I received a request to create a browser script to detect fake Marketplace.tf bots, relevant blog post: https://marketplace.tf/blog/posts/YHLZOB Installation instructions, screenshots and source code can be found here: https://github.com/dyhli/plugin-mptf-trade-check Enjoy and stay safe out there. D.Alex
In the "Stolen API Key" scam linked above the scammer's software (having control over victim's Steam account compromised earlier) swaps just created sent offer before it's confirmed. But since the initial trade is sent to a real MP bot, the the first version of the script unfortunately was useless in the intended case (statement now updated). In the other type of MP-related scam, a scammer guides a victim to become MP seller (often in Discord screen sharing) and then, before victim discovers "Deposit" link, sends him a fake deposit offer (real MP deposits work by user sending an offer to MP bot). In this case the script would indeed warn about fake MP bot. However, IMHO someone who would install this script should already know how MP website works anyway. I wasn't are of this until IceKwibby told me on Discord, I'll have something up by the end of the day. Thank you for your input.
MasterMinder
As promised, the script is now updated. When the trade is sent, it will continuously check whether it has been cancelled or accepted by Marketplace.tf. Please update the script if you have already downloaded it. How it works? D.Alex
I'm still skeptical. Once you know about the scam it's easy to avoid it by not falling for fake Steam login. And if your Steam account is already compromised, the script will not warn you about scammer swapping any of your other trade offers (not MP deposits). MasterMinder
No script can offer you 100% protection against all types of scams for an indefinite amount of time. It's like a cat and mouse game, we develop ways to protect our users, scammers get smarter and circumvent the measures we put in place or invent entirely different ways to scam people. Anyway, this script was made because it was requested by a community member specifically to "protect" people from the mp.tf deposit scam. To be frank I'm not going to play that cat and mouse game and spend many hours making very sophisticated software to prevent people from getting scammed, not because I don't want to, but because it won't help as much as you'd think. Mainly people who already know about (these) scams will probably install plugins such as this one and without any official support (e.g. from Steam, will never happen) it's not going to reach the audience that actually needs protection. Scripts like these are great, but the best way to stay safe is to always stay vigilant, educate yourself about the latest scams, verify with who you're trading (double check) and never accept anything that seems too good to be true.
