By far the easiest way to get the cats is just to buy them with real money, because the time and effort required for low-tier trading is very large compared to the returns.

Plus, you can always sell them if you get tired of them (or tired of the game), so it's not 100% money lost when you spend it on hats.

But if you can't (or won't) spend money for whatever reason, and you're serious about wanting to trade your way up, keep in mind that there's no way to make this happen quickly.  It's going to be slow going no matter what you do.  It's going to take a lot of time and/or a lot of effort.

1)  Liquidate everything.  You're basically going to have to double your value, and it'll be stupidly slow if you're not willing to invest everything you've got.  Twice as much invested = twice as much profit (approximately) in the same time.

1a)  Pay attention to the values of your items, not just their prices.  Check buyers and sellers to find values.  Your war paint cases, for example, do not have recently updated prices, and are worth more than they show.  On the other hand, your spec. Third Degree fab (which currently shows as the most valuable item in your bp) is actually worth a scrap, if that.

2)  Once you have pure, figure out what you want to buy/sell.  Choose items where there's a bit of a gap between buy listings and seller prices.  An example of an item with no gap, which you would NOT want to attempt to trade for profit: https://backpack.tf/stats/Unique/Taunt%3A Kazotsky Kick/Tradable/Craftable  Always do some research on an item before buying it.

Cosmetics that are higher in value (not craft hats) can be good for flipping.  Buy for 6, sell for 8; there's still some room for that.  Back in the day, I made good progress at low tiers of trading by flipping painted cosmetics--a craft hat (~1.33 refined) with good paint (black/white/lime/pink/TS/maybe gold/purple) can sometimes be bought for no extra, and then flipped for 5 ref or more.  You can also be one of those guys spamming the chat in trade servers with offers to buy trading cards for a scrap each.  Maybe even buy strange weapons with good parts and wait for someone willing to pay extra...you just have to find what fits your style.

But whatever else you do, no banking

No craft hat banking, no currency banking (don't try to buy and sell keys).

Here's one trick to get lots of people to divulge at least some of their methods (One easy trick!! Traders hate him!!)

Post status update saying you made x amount of profit trading and everyone else is nubs, they'll line up to tell you how much more than you they made and how they made it, to prove they're better than you.

  • 2 weeks later...

It would probably be faster to go back in time to 2013 and scam  buy hats at very cheap prices

Not saying you should, 2013 was a dangerous time...
