Does anyone even use marketplace.tf?

Realistically, I only have a few hours each day I could actually dedicate to seriously managing cash trades (responding to friend requests, thoroughly vetting potential buyers, etc.).  That's only 12.5% of the day.  On marketplace, my items are available 100% of the day and I don't have to worry about vetting buyers.  The 10% is worth it for me for that reason alone.  No fear of chargebacks and the 10% starts to look very, very reasonable, especially considering SCM takes 15% and you don't actually get IRL money, so you still need to look for some other way to cash out anyway.

The biggest thing I love about marketplace is the ease of use and peace of mind it gives to my customers. They just add the item to their cart, input their payment method information, and checkout. No haggling, no dealing with another person, etc. It is the equivalent of going into a store where everything is labelled where it is, using a credit card to pay, and checking out versus going to a Swap Meet, sifting through endless piles of stuff, and haggling with cash after finding the items you are looking for. It is just easier overall and I don't have to be online atm for them to make the purchase. From small items to big items, it is easier to go through marketplace.tf and the only other place with the same ease to access is scrap.tf. I have found myself overpaying multiple refs just to get something easily and reliably. Marketplace.tf is the same without hampering the traditional process of adding me to discuss prices as I can pull the item immediately back into my inventory.

Disclaimer: I am going to be a bit lazy here in my response in that I didn't read through the thread if such a response was already posted.

Steam takes 15%.
You expect someone to run a free website for you to cash out with out any taxes? Why should someone even do that? Tell me if you make a website like that paying 1000s of $ to run the servers and bot servers n maintaining other stuff. Would you do it for free ?
10% is just fine and its a great website. Idk why you are pissed about 10% there are sales that happen at over 2000$ so 350 is small in front of that ;p

Correction : You dont pay 10% for advertising you pay the 10% if your item sells, Advertising on the website is free, You can put your items in anytime and take it out anytime.

backpack.tf and other websites you mention do not let you sell the item for irl money. Hence they are free and mp.tf takes 10%

Its much safter tou use mp.tf because they do not do chargebacks like some stupid kids out there who chargeback after few days or weeks.

Verifying your address with the website is just to safe guard your account. For example if anyone is to hack your steam account they easily get access to your marketplace.tf account as well. SO its best to enable 2 factor authenticator and about address verification. Its optional you dont have to do it if you dont want to.

I am not sure if there is a support staff team 24/7 but every time I had an issue I have made a support ticket for which I have gotten replies and the issue sorted out within 24 hours and I am happy.
You expect a lot from them IRC live customer support? <--- Thats asking too much.

Personally I have had no such issues in the past but if there exist a problem like this, then it needs to be fixed. Items might some time take time to show up in the site inventory if steam is down.

It may lack features but its constantly updated and being developed by the devs to give the best experience to users.

"this item may potentially have valuable attachments"  --> Hover your mouse on it and you can see what the attachments are (Parts spells paint etc) You dont need to go to anyone's backpack.tf to find that item.

"and good luck figuring out which Sunbeams Demoman's Fro is the one you're actually buying. The site doesn't even link to the Steam profile of the seller" ---> There is a button called view item on backpack.tf which leads to item history of the item giving you all details you need.

If you used the site to purchase items and if the payment was not working then you probs had issues with linking your card or paypal to the site. (Not sure if that is the case) Best make a support ticket and let them know. I am sure you will get a reply in 24 hours max.

ofc  Alot of people use it on an everyday basis. I mean just look at the keys over 5000 sell each day and the people who face problems such as these are very less.

Bought a max's severed head more than 3 hours ago and I still haven't got a trade offer. It's actually horrible.

I’ve received 99% of the items I have bought in minutes. Is it under review? It is probably that or one of those rare times that there is an actual problem in the system.

I'm pretty sure it was under review but I got it around 4 hours after the purchase

  • Every sale cuts off a big, fat slice.....
  • It's inferior to using bots.... ???idk
  • No one cares how good your encryption is; everything can be cracked.
  • Every on-site feature (such as real world identity verification) takes anywhere from half an hour to half a year to receive any sort of response. Everything is handled manually and the site's not staffed 24/7 by a team of support specialists, so the disparity in wait times before you can do anything is fucking massive. There's no IRC or live customer service center so you can slam your fists and demand help, either.
  • The site is notoriously bugged....
  • The site simply lacks features it should have by default....

OPs points are good even if the examples where.. not good. So with only issue stated I wonder:

Does anyone disagree with whats written now?

Nobody really addressed the cause but instead attacked the OP

The fee they charge is less than the SCM, plus, with SCM, you never get to take the $$$ out and put it into your pocket.  And has been already mentioned, they assume any risk, not you. So whats the problem then?

It seems apparent you have reasons to not like it.  That's the great thing about this situation of yours......if you don't like it, don't use it. B)

They really dont assume any/all risk. If Valve were to shut down/trade ban external trading sites I can promise you your items will not be reimbursed by marketplace, Geel or anyone else. Not saying theres a risk of this really happening but still..

"if you don't like it, don't use it."

[rage] what?..why?..but.. no, just no [/rage]B)

I have sold over $7,000 worth of Team Fortress 2 Items using Marketplace.tf.

That is AFTER taxes.

I don't even mind the 10%, because I would have probably never gotten that much sold without this site. I clicked deposit, I lived my life (without having to constantly be online and sell items for pure, then sell the keys to some random person on paypal that might chargeback me), and $7000 showed up.

So yes, people still do use marketplace.tf. If you don't want to use it that's up to you, but you wasted your time by typing out an essay about why it is bad.

If someone has issues with a service that you yourself use in a much grander scale shouldnt you be on his side? I mean theres only a matter of time before something  same thing happens to you. Check out Reddit, there are some real issues that are not being addressed or even responded to.

To be clear: I use the site and havent had any (real) issues, doesnt mean I dont want them to fix whats broken before I get screwed

You went with the "I have no issues so youre WRONG!" argument, with a touch of personal insult.

yeah peace of mind is more than worth the minor to nonexistent issues with the website it sounds like you were just venting over a held purchase.

but wow I think we can close this OP just their got cheeks clapped several times over

I dont know how you came to that conclusion, but since on topic: As a seller I can tell you it really..REALLY sucks to see Unusuals for several hundred $$ "Pending Review" so long they get cancelled

WRONG!

  • Marketplace TAKES 10% of listed price
  • SCM ADDS 15% to what you receive

LETS SAY YOU SELL AN ITEM THATS LISTED FOR $100 ON BOTH SITES

You Receive $90 from Marketplace:

100 - 90 = 10
( 10 / 100 ) * 100 = 10.00 %

You Receive $86.97 from SCM:

100 - 86.97 = 13.03
( 13.03 / 100 ) * 100 = 13.03 %

This is becoming a little WMD, charge backs arent or havent been that much of an issue.. Granted we have all "heard a story about this 1 guy.."

Point is theres always gonna be someone finding some scam/backdoor etc. Just read the latest Blog post on Mp.tf

WHAT?!? We-consumers are paying for a service, if something is wrong with the service you are -againg- PAYING for and there is a need for 24h support (international userbase) then it should have been up before opening the site to the public. You people act like its a privilege to use the site!

I took a quick count of Keys sold from April 1-10 and that gave approx $18k a month in profit... FROM KEYS ALONE.(3k Keys pr day to be kind, even you wrote 5k so..)

So I really dont think its a lot to ask

No, I went with the "I have no issues, and I am going to tell you that you are wrong because you are." argument.

OP listed a bunch of facts, many of which aren't true, and many of which I have never experienced.

I have a verified PayPal, and have completed every step recommended by Marketplace.tf to help a smooth and safe experience. I can only assume that if someone else were to setup and do things in the exact manner I did (the correct way) that they wouldn't experience any issues either.

I know that there are issues with slow delivery sometimes, which is out of my experience because all the items I have ever purchased have been delivered in 2min or less. But even with occasionally slow delivery, it is really dumb to write a long post exaggerating how terrible this website is that has helped thousands of people get the items or cash they need. I was a good example of someone who it has helped immensely, so of course I will rush to it's defense and share my great experiences with it.

To write a big post asking "If anyone else uses marketplace.tf anymore" is stupid, so I made sure to tell OP that it was stupid. It is obvious that YES, people still use marketplace.tf because it is by far the best cash trading website for TF2.

P.S. - OPSKINS sucks because they take ridiculous fees, charge for premium membership to reduce fees (like really? a membership doesn't REMOVE fees??), and they need your SSN and other personal information that they shouldn't need. It's a big big no from me, dawg.

you act like everyone sells unusual for "hundreds of dollars"  on marketplace. you know that only .00001% of the community does that right?

It has now been two years since I made this thread and marketplace.tf still doesn't do verification properly, even when all the necessary documents have been provided to them. I've submitted whatever they wanted, had them verified and the site still demands verification. Support shrugs their shoulders and tells me to wait another 7 days for another postcard only to repeat the problem.

It's trash.
