Apo
I have HD600s with a Magni 2, no DAC. Why are you spending more on the AMP/DAC than the headphones?
The Walking Wingull
your spending too much on your amp/dac. Sure you can get a decent one but you really should try them out and determine if you can tell a difference between them before buying anything expensive. Ive got 6xx's and i cannot tell the difference between running them off my phone, off my portable amp, and off my roland audio interface i use for recording besides differences in volume which is fixed by turning the volume up. Try a blind test. If you can tell the difference between different volume matched sources with a blind test then by all means spend 400 dollars on your amp/dac otherwise just go for a cheaper option. I'll see if I can find somehow to get a test for these. I do live close to LA so there should be some audiophile convention or something near that I could sample them. I also have a backup plan. If I wait for a sale for the amp, I could actually sell it for a profit on ebay after building it. The amp is no risk plus has the benefit of being fully upgradable but will look into cheaper dac I guess to see if I can find something cheaper to try first. Getting the headphones first. Edit: apparently a DAC on macs are pretty decent and I do have a mac so might skip out on the DAC if it sounds decent with just the amp.
