Desperate trader or attempted scammer?

So I haven't cleaned out my friends list in a while, and as a result I have a bunch of people I've added for one trade or another that still have me in their friends list.

I was approached by this user who tried to sell me a gold botkiller sniper rifle. The first trade that I accepted, I saw that he was selling a gold botkiller sniper rifle, but the trade crashed before I was able to determine whether it was mk1 or mk2. From the price the user was asking for, and knowing they had at least a cursory knowledge of suggested prices, I assumed it was the mk1, with a suggested price of 4 keys.

We haggled for a bit, and came to an agreement, but when the trade came back up, I backed out, realizing it was the less valuable mk2.

I'm just curious as to what other users think, whether this was a move of desperation to get something they wanted, or an attempt at a scam. I've attached the entire chat log below. I can't find the spoiler button on the editor, so if someone knows where it is, I'll happily throw the image under one.

Scamming = stealing. he wanted to trade with you, so not a scam. I could sell violet paint for 3 houwars and it wouldnt be a scam

Okay, maybe my terminology is wrong. What's the word I'm looking for?

I guess you could take the view that he was deliberately misleading you to start with but he did acknowledge which one it was in the end so it's not a scam. and puddingkip scamming doesn't have to be blatant stealing; I'd say sharking is a form of scamming. This isn't sharking either, it's like a mirror image of a shark where he's implying his item has a higher value than it does. But I think he's just desperate.

Misleading? He never ever stated it was a mk. 1. He didn't mislead anybody. That you think it would be a mk.1 at his price, that's not his fault. If I was to sell a baseball bill's sport shine thingy for 6 keys, and you'd think it was a bill's hat. That's not intentionally misleading you in any way. And maybe you think sharking is a way of scamming. I disagree. Making an idiot believe his picasso painting is worth $10 isn't stealing. And paying a b/o can never be sharking

A smart guy? He hoped to take a bit of advantage, but did nothing wrong
