Interesting you bring up Harper.  I don't think Harper succeeded mainly because the youth didn't go out and vote.  I think a large part of the reason why he maintained power for so long is because in Canada, the left is split between the NDP and the Liberals.  So while a larger percentage of Canadians think of themselves as left leaning than conservative, the conservative vote was united in one party.

This is really interesting because the same thing may happen in states, only with the roles of left and right reversed.  Trump said that he'd consider running as an independent if he doesn't get the nomination.  If that happens, I'd bet my last dollar on a Democratic government, no matter who they choose to run.  With Trump as an independent, the right vote will be split between him and the Republican candidate, basically guaranteeing a democratic victory.

Ah quite true; the lack of youth voters was only one of the factors that lead to Harper remaining Prime minister for so long, since a majority of the older demographic tended to send their votes his way, while those who did vote for either the NDP or the Liberals were less in numbers until the recent election, therefore resulting in less seats for both parties while the conservatives votes guaranteed them more seats than both left parties combined, with them not having to split them with any other party. It was only when the country as a whole realized this that people went to the recent vote looking at it with the end goal in mind.

Still, as an outsider looking in to the states coming election, I am interested in seeing how the country plans to move forward.

Why does it matter that I don't know about him? If he wants to prove a point he can state his arguments and not just post a picture of someone.

The fact that you don't even know who Stephen Harper is (he led our country - one of your biggest trade partners - for 9 years.  Were you even remotely interested in politics, you'd have come across him) pretty much precludes you from submitting any sort of valuable comments in a political discussion.

Can you go troll somewhere else with your pro-Trump rhetoric?  I do hope you're trolling, since I have trouble believing that someone with enough brain power to work a keyboard could actually hold those kinds of opinions.

On the one hand I'm glad that 95% of the people here can't actually vote. On the other hand, a lot of these people represent the future of our country and some of this probably represents the opinion of their parents.

We're so fucked....

Say what you want about Bernie and his ideas, he's just not electable. He refuses to choose a word other than "socialism" and he'll never get elected using that term.

While that's somewhat true, this is also an enormous opportunity for the future of our country. If the youth turnout is good, Bernie could absolutely win the nomination, and I think he would have enough momentum in the general election as well. Furthermore, if he does become president and does a good job, I think the taboo mentality around the word "socialism" would go away and it could open the door for a lot of positive change in this country. In that respect voting for Bernie is the way to go, and if it doesn't work out we'll cringe through 4 years of Hillary which is basically a net 0 change from Obama.

Idk... Honestly, Rubio or Cruz looks the best... Most Republicans definetly don't have enough votes to win. Trump is an asshole, and insults war vets, and Hilary lies.

Btw, about Bernie: If he doubles the minimum wage, either companies will lay off people (to cope with the 2x), OR inflation will rise. Either way, he'll kill America. Btw, his accent is cool.

Most of the young'uns that are choosing Trump now will be old enough to vote for Kanye in 2020; we are fucked indeed if Kim Kardashian is the First Lady

The point is that media badmouths trump and draws everything he says out of proportion. People say Trump is a racist, though he is only against illegal immigrants not legal ones.

I can't even respond to this level of bigotry and stupidity.

Every candidate outright dumb (trump), clueless (hilary) or unrealistic (Bernie). I like Bernie but if he gets in fairly certain you will just see him fight for 4 years trying to do unrealistic changes, they are changes which are good but will never happen.

I want trump just because Im interested in seeing his outrageous comments at the UN and him taking a piss on America's international relationships.

But... He's like. Doubling the minimum wage ...

Which is kinda stupid since everything will just increase 2 fold. Just because you have more money doesnt mean ypur purchasing power increases if everyone increases it means your purchasing power decreases. Doubling min wage out of nowhere means companies will have to pay x2 for cost of production...etc which means costs will be passed on to you...

I'm not too deep into politics or anything, so I'm not really sure what I'm saying, but I heard Ted Cruz is a pretty good candidate.

I dislike Hillary a metric arseload though, surely someone involved in 17+ scandals wouldn't have a chance? Nope.

It always amazes me...it seems like I meet a lot of Americans who dislike Obama.  On the other hand, I don't think I've ever spoken to a Canadian who doesn't have a favourable opinion of Obama, at least when compared to other US presidents.

- We just got our first increase in budget for science and health research since 2003

- Legalized gay marriage

- Universal healthcare

- Pull out troops overseas and decrease defense spending budget (mind you this is AFTER we caught and killed bin laden under his presidency)

- Pro-environmental efforts including emissions mandates for cars and factories, research for alternative energies

- Education reform at every level including encouraging activity and healthy eating habits in grade school, helping with loan repayment programs in college, and overhauling the pathetic testing systems

- Unemployment rate back down to 5

Yup, all terrible, lol. Don't know how people here come up with the idea that he's terrible.

Yeah I should clarify lol. I don't think it's a bad thing, I would have voted for him both times and think he's done a great job. What I meant was Hillary wouldn't be much of a change of pace from Obama, and compared to the excitement Bernie brings to the table I think it would be a bit of a letdown. That, and I don't think Hillary has the charisma Obama has. But no, obviously not a bad second choice.

it also means it will be a lot harder for U.S. companies to stay in the U.S. rather than export work overseas or to Latin/South American, where it would be sooo much cheaper. This would drive a lot of companies out of the U.S. and only really benefit workers at companies like restaurants which rely on in-store location sales.

A lot of the blame for the least productive congress in history is shifted onto Obama

To my knowledge US isnt competitive in manufacturing sectors at all already the reason why they have yet to be outsourced is due to heavy government subsidies and a much lower tax for companies. Bernie also wants to increase the tax for companies as well which is 'correct' because they are barely getting taxed compared to the rest of the world and continually make money off Americans but that would also make the american manufacturing sector noncompetitive. Then outsource > unemployment > negative GDP ... Etc :S

Typical words from a liberal. Throwing around words like bigotry, racism, sexism, homophobia without any context what so ever.

I personally don't care who wins the election. I mean, the US had Bush for 8 years. What could possibly be worst than that? (Apart from Trump, of course).

He's also done a lot of bad things for the country. He destroyed our national budget, he created a national health care (FREAKING USELESS, TRUST ME, I'M ON IT), and he's just being a lame duck now.

"Trust me. I'm on it." I'm a medical student, lol. From my perspective this is a great thing. There used to be tons of uninsured people coming into the emergency room which puts a tremendous strain on the healthcare system. When someone is uninsured, hospitals have to increase rates for everyone else to compensate for the loss. What this ultimately means is that (1) physicians can get into issues for reimbursement and (2) everyone else's insurance rates and premiums go up. It's not a perfect plan, but it's certainly better than not having it.

And destroyed national budget? He has nothing to do with that, lol. You can blame a divided Congress for that. They're all so smug with themselves for passing the budget for the next 5 years like they did something amazing by preventing another shutdown. It's their fucking job, lol. It's like saying, good job, your teachers at school are teaching today instead of shutting down the school. As commander in chief, Obama reduced defense spending.

I think given the choice, Obama would have gone for a single-payer health care plan which is really what we need. The Affordable Care Act isn't perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than what we had.

I'm a bit surprised by this.

A bit, but Bernie gets all the youth, which is likely most of this forum so I'm not shocked.
