I've heard of this happening to people, I think it's just when valve is doinking around with their stuff that certain things disappear. I'd say contact support with it as a question, as to why this could happen, and what ways are there to prevent it, or have it so that steam can't fuck people over losing 'potentially something of greater/sentimental value'.
