OP, it has nothing to do with random adds.

You clicked on a Phishing link, plain and simple.

One of your friends could be hijacked, and send you a link, and still steal your account!

Only accept friend requests you are expected to see, like if you told someone to add you or it's someone you met on a server. I know a phisher bot when I see one. If the request was sent without consent beforehand, don't trust it. If you see a funky looking name like "dbnasjdfnu834" DO NOT ADD IT. It's most likely a bot with a randomly generated name. The most common phisher name is [unassigned]. Just some words of advice. I avoided getting hacked because I saw the horrible grammar.

Steam error excuse:

"My frend want add u but he get error so he not able 2 pls add him: steamcuntmunity.com/notaphisherbot"

Look for spelling errors in the link. If it's misspelled, it's the phisher site. If you can't tell, look on the website. It will not say https:// with "Valve Corp USA" on the URL

Picture:

This one exploits the human curiosity

"Hey is this you? www.totallynotaphisher.site.com/img/youreabout2gethackedlel"

DO NOT FALL FOR IT! It's most likely a virus AND a phishing method. They don't have to add you, they could get into the account of one of your friends who fell for it and send this message.

The "is this the item you wanted?"

"Did you want this item? I'm currently selling it. www.gettingtiredofthinkingofthesesitenames.cum/notavirus/totallynotaphisher.urdumb/"

This one's similar to the picture one. They CLAIM that they are selling something. Don't even touch that link, EVER. It actually transmits a spyware virus to try to find out your Steam information. If you let it load, well, you're fucked. Game over.

The commented scam

"Hey, do you remember me? www.fakepicturesite.cum/totally/not/a.virus/lel"

These can appear as any of the aforementioned methods, except for the "my friend can't add you" one.

Hope this helped. Stay safe and do not trust anyone who randomly does shit like that.

I don't understand why people try to use such low methods of hijacking, just to get silly virtual hats. Are they that desperate? It is not like they are going to get laid for owning a big collection of virtual Team Fortress 2 hats.

They do however get large ammounts of profit.
