Keys Prices in SCM May Have Hit Their Peak

Alright, so it looks like keys in the Steam Community Market are now averaging about the same price as those in the official TF2 Store.

So I've been wondering...

What happens now? Does this mean keys will stop rising?

Will they continue to rise regardless of the market price?

Do you think people are willing to pay more than the official store price just for the convenience, meaning that we could see them up at $2.60?

I just want to see what everyone thinks will happen.

Edit a 3 hours later: Looks like they have just hit $2.53, so it seems plausible that they could rise even more.

Keys can continue to rise past the TF2 Store price since the SCM keys are instantly tradeable. People who want to uncrate will go to the TF2 store while those who need them for trades will go through the SCM.

TL;DR: There is no price peak on the SCM.

key rise because metal is free, you play you get where as keys cost IRL money. Nothing will happen.

i.e. So much ref chasing so few key = rise in price cuz people start bidding up the price.

They will go back to the price before the sale. Slightly cheaper than mann co store. The reason they went down by 30p is because of the summer sale.

I've never had to wait any period of time to trade the keys I buy from the TF2 store, does this only happen for certain people?

Keys won't stop rising. The community market prices don't really matter because of the tax. There are still people selling keys on Paypal for less than $2. And what do you mean convenience? Nobody is going to pay over $2.50. The only advantage the SCM has over the Mann Co. Store is that keys are normally cheaper. If they aren't, nobody will buy from the SCM. They'll go back down anyway

For certain people, yes. If you haven't purchased something in the last xx amount of days, the keys will be untradeable for a few days. I don't remember the exact time frame since it never happens to me.

It usually only happens when you're using a new method to pay for your items in the TF2 store. i.e a New Credit Card, or your first $20/$50 Steam Gift Card.

There are many out there who understand key pricing far better than myself.

That being said, I do not believe SCM prices would affect metal prices.  I've always found that real world money does not translate well into TF2 on the low end.  You get free metal from idling (weps->scrap), and that's why keys are rising.  NEW keys only enter the market from the TF2 store.  It would be like if the mint stopped making $5s, but printed billions of $1s and scattered them all over.  Not to mention the average (majority) TF2 player buys keys with metal in game, not from SCM or the store with real money.

I could be totally wrong, but this is my impression.

CSGO keys are different, the only way to but it at original $2.49 price (with steam wallet) is to buy the game itself then buy the keys from in game store.

Also Australium gold paint are always above 99 cents in SCM and that makes me wonder why are so many clueless buyer buys it anyway. Just launch TF2 and you can buy the paint for 99 cents easy.

The reason why keys go past 2.49 in the SCM is because WA state residents get bent over with tax. (When I was living in Seattle it was around $2.71 for a key)

There's also a problem where sometimes it says you will have a waiting period when you really won't.  I've had that happen to me.  I bought some crap from the mannco store, it said it wouldn't be tradeable right away, but it was.

If you buy from the mannco website instead, you can actually avoid the problem completely.  There's no waiting periods there.

  • 3 weeks later...

Seems like nobody has mentioned this yet. Currency exchange rates!

2.60 for some countries is a lot less than the mann co store price of their country's currency after conversion.

I have a good example for this too but I'll type it once I get in my pc in the morning
