Build for Video Making/Minor Streaming

Recommended Posts

Hey, I've come to revisit my desire to either upgrade/build a PC.

A docked setup is also ideal for this Laptop I use.

I hope to meet the following qualifications.

  • Run/Record standard games in 60fps/medium-High graphics like, Overwatch, and the Arkham Series; (Not big on triple A games)
  • Quicker render times in video making (Sony Vegas, After Effects, SFM etc)
  • Fit for streaming if possible

Current Specs:

Video card: GeForce 840M

CPU: Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz

Ram: 8GB

OS: Windows 10

Res: 1600x900 60hz

If more information is needed, just hmu.

I greatly appreciate any time invested into shaping an ideal setup for myself!

I am looking into a decent monitor for the holidays to dock with the laptop, and other accessories I have mostly covered.

Mental Budget: $750 - $1000

Well, there's nothing you can upgrade to help with what you want. So you'd need to build a desktop.

CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($174.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard  ($39.98 @ Newegg)
Storage: A-Data Premier SP550 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($38.88 @ OutletPC)
Case: Fractal Design Define S ATX Mid Tower Case  ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Monitor: Dell S2316M 23.0" 60Hz Monitor  ($89.99 @ Best Buy)
Total: $817.79
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

I figured. Is an external GPU unheard of for laptops?

I am working backwards into a desktop, as I have most of my ideal accessories, so a monitor and the PC is what I need in short.

Edit: Thanks for the input, I was worried I'd have to exceed somewhat far past $1000 for the rig I needed.

I'll leave the post "unsolved" incase I seek to follow-up on part alternatives.

You need a laptop with a thunderbolt port and a laptop that likes to place nice with something like a Razer Core (which costs $500 without the GPU, so it's not really any cheaper anyway).

See my edit. (if you can afford it, a 6700 would be worthwhile for streaming/faster editing speeds).

I thought the price of that Seasonic power supply was too good to be true and it turns out that's after rebate and during a sale that ends in 3 hours. Bit of a nitpick but pcpartpicker can be weird about actual pricing sometimes.

Since 1000 is his max, I feel like he could easily fit a 6600k/6700k and a decent Z170 mobo in there. How come you didn't go with that?

A 6700 would be a better choice (a 6700k+z170 board is >$1000), and I did say in a follow up post that it should be considered. But since his budget was 750-1000, I didn't want to max it out since an i5 can still handle rendering.

Ah I must have scrolled past that. An I5 could do definitely still do it but I suppose OP needs to make the decision with how he wants to spend his money.

If you want to edit videos 1tb won't be enough.

Storage can just be upgraded when needed, it's not exactly the most important thing to focus on when making a build.

Would you recommend a $1000 - 1300 budget? (I'd be willing to bare that)

I'm worried I'll need the better CPU should I stream occasionally.

Also unsure about whether Windows 7 or 10 is more optimal.

In the last year AMD has released Ryzen, so they're actually competitive again, so you can still get by at around $1000 (+tax when applicable -- Newegg only charges tax in Indiana, NJ, NY, and Ca, so keep that in mind in terms of pricing). Also, if there is a microcenter by you, then you can get the CPU+motherboard for $240~.

Windows 10, it's better in pretty much every way except for being forced to download updates, and a bit of bloat that comes pre-installed.
