[Guide] I have been scammed! What do I do?

Hi. This is my attempt at a guide since I have been scammed multiple times, a few when I was new, and a few when I thought I was a pretty experienced trader.

 1) Calm down!

  • First you need to gather information.

DO NOT CLOSE ANY CHAT WINDOWS. LEAVE THEM OPEN.

(This is important for later)

  • Head to http://steamrep.com and then search for the person's ID.

  • You should get the person's profile. For example this is mine.

  • Open up notepad or whatever text editor you use, and copy down the following information.
  • See that "copy info" button on the profile page of steamrep? Click it. That is the required information needed to submit a scam report. Paste it into your text editor.
  • Do the same again only for your account.
  • Write a brief description of what happened.
  • Take a screenshot of your trade window or chat window showing the scammer and you talking. Recommended for this is free-software called
  • Copy and paste the whole chat into the text editor.

 2) You now have the information needed to get this scumbag marked on steamrep.

3) That's fine and dandy, but what about my items?

Well, I don't want you to get too excited.

Depending on the type of scam, steam usually does not grant items back :(

There is still hope.

Head over to this thread written by our very own blind polar bear http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/1206-guide-to-recovering-hijacked-items/  Follow his guide to submitting a steam ticket. Except for the part about stolen / hijacked items. Make sure you choose scammed instead.

This was written on a tablet while I am still blinded by rage at the person that scammed me and 2 other people. Better formatting and pictures should be on the way later.

Anyone that has anything they would like to add, please comment below.

The many ways into not getting scammed:

Never do cash trades

And if you do, take pics of everything you do during that trade.

Very simple

Just because you take pics of everything, doesn't mean you can't get scammed. The only real way is to use a middleman.

Not at all. The vast majority of scams that result in one of the parties not paying up are incredibly easy to forsee. Its chargeback scams that are harder to predict, and even then its not that hard. The only time its ever hard to avoid a scam is if a hijacker hijacked a legit account and is using it to make purchases.
