Guide to Making a Good Inventory Screenshot

Inventory screenshots are an important part of backpack.tf's processes--they are harder to fake than offers and are easier to review and verify than other types of evidence.

This is a mini-guide covering the elements of a good screenshot.

  • Do not resize or shrink the image--this is important for readability
  • Include the date
  • If your trade was recent, you can include the header of your item inventory page--this makes it harder to fake

  • If your screenshot involves an unusual, you MUST take multiple screenshots--one for each hat--to show their effects, like so;

  • If your screenshot involves trades with other people who are not relevant to the trade, you can block out their names. This is not necessary, but it is polite.
  • You can use Ctrl + F to highlight relevant terms while taking your screenshot; in the above image, I used Find to highlight "Stahlhelm". When combined with the above elements, this makes it more obvious that your screenshot was legitimate.

Don't know how to take a screenshot? Google can help (just add an extra word or two depending on your operating system)

Don't know where your inventory history is? It can be found using this link. Remember that only YOU can see your own inventory history. Simply posting the link to your inventory history will not work: inventory history is private, and clicking any inventory history link will send a person to their own.

Probably need to start specifying to take screenshots directly through steam instead of on a web browser to get around the inspect element exploit people can use to fake screenshots.

It's still very very easy to fake screenshots in the steam client directly, if someone wants to fake a picture they will find out how to do it no matter if you allow browser screenshots.

This was and is targeted at people who have no idea how to take screenshots or what to include.

Anyone who wants to fake screenshots can, regardless of how they were taken. I'd rather not add more restrictions on what is acceptable, because it will confuse new people more than it will deter fakers. Sure, it puts more work on the mods, but we already have to check histories and links anyway.
