What it takes to be a "successful" trader

As i was told, backpack.tf don't ban sharkers, so i just wanna make this thread and share my disturbance with people.

I got a kid in my friends list (Gatorr Croco http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198074403176/ ) , and he eventually unboxed an unusual. Few days ago, he went to a trade server and some guy called Mark (already have changed his name to Marcello, http://steamcommunity.com/id/theoneaboveall7/  ), offered him a bunch of cheap stranges. He declined, so then he offered some miscs instead. You can see the trade on the screenshot, item history is there: http://backpack.tf/item/2514520388 . Also i've attached his other trades with Mark, where he trades Fast Learner (2.33 ref) for 2 ToD tickets and strange Disciplinary action (almost 3 keys together). Another trade was Strange Specialised Killstreak Phlog (2.5 keys) for Strange Liberty Launcher (2 ref). When i tried to talk with him, he just immediately started being asshole and said that he's ok with that and dont see anything wrong in sharking. I understand that its impossible to get back the unusual, but at least we could make some troubles for that scumbag.

Any help or advices will be highly appreciated.

Report him to outpost as, currently, they're the only ones who ban sharks.

Ignore water salesman, you can't get someone marked over sharking.

The title of this thread has nothing to do with this. I'd suggest you to report it to TF2Outpost or SteamRep.

Actually, i meant that sharking expensive items from kids is the way many traders earn their $. Anyway, thanks for the advices.

It's not scamming. And as far as the information goes, it's not even sharking. Just a bad deal for your friend. Move on, life sucks.

So offering a 2 ref item for 2.5 key item is not sharking? Well... so it should be 1 scrap or what?

That wouldn't be sharking either. I could offer you this very nice cookie for your house. You wouldn't take it, because you don't appear to be an idiot. If you do take it, it's not sharking unless I manipulate you into believing that selling your house for a cookie is a great idea.

I understand your point, but prices in tf2 are not so obvious as in real life. So i think offering on purpose less than 10% value of item is actually a shark. He wanted him to believe that this is a fair trade and he managed to do that.

The problem with this issue is that there is a very legally vague line between what is "sharking" and what is simply aggressive capitalism.

If he specifically stated that it was a good deal than it would be sharking. If he just offered it without ever mentioning that the other user is the side getting the most benefits it would still not purely be sharking. Some people, including outpost, would consider this sharking, but it technically isn't. Also I doubt that a c9 hotrod would go for 55-60 keys

A item is worth what the person holding the item thinks it is worth. You don't have to go by what backpack.tf says (I know, shocking). Let's just say I think the H.O.U.W.A.R is worth 5 keys (Not true) and I buy it off somebody for that price after I offer on it. I would not be sharking or scamming. I'm not lieing about any price or tricking them. Backpack.tf is more of a guideline. Have you ever seen a guy sell a key for the backpack price? Sucks for your friend. hopefully he will learn from this

Prices are pretty obvious. A quick 1-second google search will tell you that. Additionally, steam itself gives you a resource to price items--Steam Community Market.

Yeah, obvious. Especially prices on not priced unusuals.

Irrelevant.

Its very easy to figure out relative prices; and that is all thats required to avoid being sharked.

Your right, with a google search/community market search to base your prices you might end up with a bad deal, BUT you will end up with relative prices giving you a general idea of your items worth--is it worth 5 cents? or is it worth a hundred dollars? I.e. is it worthless crap or does it actually have some value. Theres a big difference between getting a bad deal and getting sharked; and the relative pricing thats available for all unusuals is more than enough to give you a general idea of an items worth eliminating the possibility of getting sharked.

Added him.

Told him to enjoy his ban and he was a disgusting person.

He was like 'please don't report me'.

Laughed.

Removed.

Mate, i understand all this stuff. The thing is, there always will be a lot of newbies, but experienced traders that "buy a house with a nice cookie" should be somehow punished.

Man, that was not me, that was my 12 years old friend who unboxed an unusual with 3 keys.

(Sorry for multipost)

The people getting "Sharked" should learn to use the internet or ask other people for prices.

As being TF2's one of the first sharkers when trading was released (Changed my hound dog for a max head (and then being a dumbass I changed it for 4 hats instead) and when I found out my mistake when the max head turned out to be valuable I was like damn and then I started trading random people in servers simply asking for hats. (I have probably gained like 150+ total) and that was before I even found out about the backpack viewers like tf2 items.

Good days indeed I will never miss the fun I had with that. But to respond to the OP the guy who sharked your friend is a total cunt honestly all Russians are like that. I can see my greed from a mile away too.

But its also his/your fault for having/giving him all those valuable items (who in their right mind does this) its like letting a 12 year old drive a lambo he's going to wreck it in a matter of seconds.

And considering you appear to want your unusual back just to profit from it is also sharking in a different perspective.
