ksolis01
Google is good for this stuff. I am going to habor a guess of not wanting to give out the API key to avoid us from overloading the weak servers this site runs on.
JayTuut
What does it do? Basically allows an external login to backpack.tf e.g. You use an API key with the tf2outpost script to get backpack.tf item prices to see on outpost
Axle Change
API keys are used to get classifieds listings, etc, etc. Full documentation is here https://backpack.tf/developer The primary reason API keys are private is because they are linked to your account. It's the same concept as to why you don't let random people onto a school computer account- they would do dumb shit, and it would look like you did it even though the accounts are really identical. Leaking an API key is essentially the same as leaking a password in that the website will assume you requested for said data.
Julia
To use certain APIs you need a key. http://backpack.tf/developer
