Automatic Suggestion Closure after a set amount of time.

So I have noticed a popular trend in the unusual suggestions lately.

There always seems to be a alarming large number of suggestions that only have a single QS as their proof, and are open for a long period of time, being a up to a month (more if the mods would let them). Mind you I am not talking about new or unpriced items. A lot of times these suggestions will stay active until either moderator will close it or a bunch of people will flood it with QS's lower to what that current hat is. They open it, then let other users finish their work for them, because while that listing is active, no one is going to buy it for any higher then the set price if fear of it passing.

Most of the time an unusual is accepted, is usually well within the first week of creation (2-3 days of the listing). In these cases, the community generally agrees with a suggestion, which is how things should be if a community generally belives that to be the case. Just being able to drop a single sale on a suggestion, and wait for others to support with proof from the sales 2 -3 weeks later that support the price because no one is willing to pick it up in fear of dropping, is wrong. Seems to be an easy way to get a blackbelt.

I think limiting the amount of time on suggestions would help greatly. I would love to see at least two weeks as a limitation, and that is being generous IMO.

The issue your talking about is definitely a problem, but I don't think changing the time really matters. Some hats do need the full month for a proper decision to be made, weather the suggestion is being left open because poorly usable sales or a simple lack of sales. Leaving suggestions open allows for more time to find more proof to support/disprove the suggestion. I agree there is an issue with leaving some suggestions up tho, such as ones that are forcing too large of drops. In theory, it shouldn't matter if there's an open suggestion, but since most people use bp.tf as a bible, people are not going to trade more than the open suggestion price because they don't want to lose value. The main issue is reselling; most people are fine with overpaying for a hat they really want, but If they don't think they can resell for close to what they paid for because bp.tf price is lower, there not going to buy said hat.

I think the real solution is mods taking swifter action closing these types of suggestions, rather than calling half of them "close enough" after 1 month due to the phenomena you described. Most of these types of suggestions seem to happen when people are doing trains trying to update all of a specific hat, and are forcing bad suggestions to update all of them. To avoid this I always ask myself whether the suggested price is accurate/the proof used is quality, or there is an ample amount of proof. If it fails one of those, I wont post a suggestion. Id rather have out-of-date accurate pricing than indate inaccurate pricing. The circling heart batting helm suggestion fails every test, defintly a quicksell used, price suggested is too low, only one sale, so many red flags, yet the suggester creates it and it is left open for a month by the mods -.-

1) If a quicksell is used as the main price, point that out because the suggestion is invalid.

2) Suggestions are left open for various reasons. These could be to let the item's market stabilize, if a sale being used isn't the best one (i.e Bulk or Minis), a Mini depends on a hat with an open suggestion, etc.

3) Nobody has to follow backpack.tf's prices. If they want to buy the item being priced for more than the suggested value, then that's up to them. If anything, that sale would make the suggestion wrong most of the time.

4) Even if the community agrees with a price change, evidence is needed to do so.

(1) Outliers are defined not by the time it takes to sell a hat but how the sale relates to other sales and offers. Sometimes hats sell fast for pure due to luck. When there is a single sale with no other data, it is impossible to tell whether the sale is an outlier or not. That's why these suggestions get left up for a while to wait for more sale / offer data.

(2) I look at every single suggestion that has been up for 1-2 days. If a suggestion is up for longer than that, it is being left up intentionally because it either needs more digging into or we need to wait for more sales. These suggestions are being left up intentionally.

(3) There is a limit on the time for suggestions. When I train new mods, I tell them that number is 1 month. Unusuals don't sell quickly. Sometimes you have to wait a month to get more sale info. I don't really see what the need is to rush through accepting / rejecting suggestions in 1-2 weeks. More data is always better than less data. If leaving up a suggestion for a month gets you 2-3 sales instead of just 1, then I would call it a win every time.
