How to relieve anxiety when taking Tests?

I face a serious issue when it comes to test taking, but specifically only when it comes to math. The issue has existed in the past but it has never gotten to the point where it's this bad. Before I even get the test, I get this crushing feeling in my chest and I start panicking despite putting the effort to study extensively. I eventually freak out and start second guessing myself on everything, and eventually most of what I studied in a fit of panic. This has become a serious mental block and has caused my GPA to drop massively, as this is the only class I'm getting an F in. The rest of my grades are stellar this year, nothing lower than a B, even in AP Euro. If anybody could suggest something to help me, I'd be extremely grateful to you.

The crushing sensation in your chest is a common side effect of excessive stress, when it comes to test time just don't overthink it. A good tip I can give you is to chew gum because it gives you something to do and keeps your brain in an idle relaxed state

can you listen to music while you do tests? It always reliefs me from test stress.

No, phones definitely not allowed. Anything electronic other than our graphic calculators is completely forbidden.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Don't want to sound cliche, but eat. Eating well (DO NOT EAT JUNK) always makes me feel better before and after a large test. Milk and cereal is a must. Math is a fairly straight forward subject, and it comes very easily to some, like me, but comes off harder to others. If you are doing something like calc, like I am, id recommend pauls online notes or something. Very ez to just skim over before a test, and if you understand the notes, then you are good. Also, i heard peppermint helps.

For some tips to do during tests, in the moment.

1. Breathing, focusing on a count that helps you, lots of people count out to 10, or have 4 second inhale, 2 second hold, 3 second exhale.

2. Gum Chewing, have to say for me this was the best stress relief.

3. Think of phrases that help boost your confidence and relax you.

For before tests, preperation is key.

1. Eat healthy and foods that give you energy.

2. Keep snacks on you for before / middle if they let you / and after the test

3. Sleeping well is really important

4. Do what preperation you need to feel less stress, i know it sounds silly, but if you are worried about something, go and look over it again.

5. I've noticed for friends that taking notes on certain stuff that will be tested on, relaxes them.

6. Make sure to drink lots of water

Also for a general key, stress can be reduced by practicing meditation and breathing excersises, and maintaining a healthy diet / water amount / exercise in general.

I know it sounds like a health teacher, but it really works wonders.

Also I've heard that getting a tutor just to double check your work, and give you confidence is extremely beneficial.

Before Tests:

Just keep studying. Taking breaks does NOT work, it only creates gaps in your memorization and leads to error

Memorization is the only thing that works, tricks to remember or anything else are sloppy and ineffective. Memorize every formula and then write them down IMMEDIATELY as the test begins. Copy from those and fill in the variables.

If you really think you can't pass a test:

slader.com has a lot of answers for just about every textbook ever

If you've abandoned all hope, you may want to just try and help yourself by utilizing your craftiness.

Ways of demonstrating your craftiness during an exam include:

Scrawling the formulas into your calculator case before the exam in very thin pencil to show that you're on top of the topic

Preprogramming said formulas into your calculator

Utilizing the resource of a nearby friend. Raising your pencil lead-up could show your corroborating pal that the answer is A, down for B, left for C and right for D, just as a quick review for silent practice tests.

Essay questions generally rely on a few certain key-words for points. Know your audience; speak directly to the teacher, they are the one grading it. Don't right down what the book had if the teacher will like something else better.

Hope this helps

When I'm feeling stressed I just think about how little this thing actually means to me personally and just relax.

I'd love to do that, but I come from a family where the only grades they care about is math and only math so my stress is doubled.

You should relax and study a bit. When studying, don't cram it all on the last day. Instead, do it over the course of around one week of the test. This ensures you know it and your not just

cramming your head filled with facts. Also, you can try having someone hypnotize you. You know when you enter a room to do something and you forget what you were going to do? You were

in a hypnotic state. If you are hypnotized and un hypnotized  before the test, you generally won't be as stressed out. You have to find someone who knows how to do this though.

Probably don't actually do that. If you are really having severe problems, there are usually resources available. It may seem like just a line, but tests are just measurements of what you've learned. They're usually unwelcome to everyone, as well--most teachers hate being forced to test their students, and will be willing to help you find a way around the problem if you know the material, but have problems with tests.

I've also seen students go to teachers for help, get some tutoring, complete fail to learn even a bit of the material...and still be passed with a B+ just  because they made an effort and were honest about having trouble. It does depend on your teacher, but lots of them will at least respect you more if you ask for help before turning to alternative methods of succeeding at tests, which aren't themselves a good indicator of success. And if you aren't a prick that your teacher hates, they'll want to see you succeed.

And if the thought of talking to your teacher is also a scary thought, just remember that there are plenty of starving children in Africa with AIDS who would kill to have their biggest problem be that they have to talk to their teacher.

Think about the fact that due to global warming, everyone in the testing room will be dead in 35 years. Woah. Isn't that strange. It's like I don't give a fuck anymore type of thing.

Chew gum and constantly review study material in your head right up until that test in on your desk. If it's multiple choice underline important words and phrases (I guess in math this would be the equation, problem, technique, important numbers, etc) and eliminate irrelevant information and answers. The more youre able to narrow down a problem the less likely you are to be wrong.

Other things I do is keep a drink on me, usually water but Ive also used Red Bull a lot because it personally helps me focus. Also look up from your test if you feel like youre stuck. It's refreshing to look away for a second and literally take a second and third look at a problem to see if you missed anything.

Take a deep breath and just go for it.

Tell yourself that being nervous only makes the situation worse.

Try to talk it down.

Tell others that you are well prepared or just simply prep alot lol.

I personally cant drink/eat before a test because when I get nervous I always have to cough/a faucial reflex, so chewing gum doesnt work for me.

Good luck with your tests fam

Inhale through nose, hold it for 10 seconds, exhale

repeat 3 times

(depending on how much time you're allowed)

read through the questions before hand, and try and think of solutions

go to any questions you KNOW you can do, and circle them, leave the "challenging" ones uncircled

do all the circled questions, and then do the "challenging" ones

this is what i do

personally anything to make the test more structured helps me

This may not be a very good advice, but I myself have been suffering in the past from panic anxiety and social anxiety disorder.

My advice is to just not care at all, atleast that's what worked for my social anxiety disorder, I do panic alot.

When I panic I just relax, think about something (ex. I always think of a script for a video or something that will probably never happen but question everything about it) and I think about it, write it down if I can.

But during lessons I can't do this, so I exhale and inhale slowly and relaxed, I always feel a litte sensation in my throat which relaxes me.

This has reduced both my anxiety's alot, and I hope it reduces yours as well.

Having a positive can make a big difference believe it or not. If you go into a test thinking oh man I am gonna fail I am soo gonna get an F ;-; then chances are you probably will. You just gotta think hey I got this I just need to calm down and focus on what I need to get done. Some form of studying is also good.

Focus on things that you really enjoy and kinda put yourself in that setting.  For instance if you like the beach your are there just chilling soaking up the sun not a care in the world, no pressure.  Breathing is a big thing as well.

pot brownies

Wtf no? Weed does relieve stress but it also makes you very easily distracted and unfocused. That's not something I'd want when taking an exam.
