What game opened you up to it's genre the most?

(For example, I never used to play MMORPGs since the ones I've played before where pretty bland but I tried out "Path of Exile" and it really opened me up to other MMORPGs and the like.)

I remembered playing Chess Titans when I was around 5 or 6. I usually lost to the computer because I didn't really know how to play chess back then. But it did make me become curious on other board games and I enjoyed those ever since.

Oh that's nice, experiencing new skills like chess at such a young age is such an advantage!

I played Age of Empires 1 when I was young. I fucking love the RTS genre more than anything, but at the same time its also the genre im the worst at.

Call of duty with FPSes, I stay with it but the recent CoDs are making me lose my faith. I used to be excited about the new CoD every year and now it's like "EVERYONE LIKES THE FUTURE RIGHT?", It's just not fun anymore.

I've become more of a Battlefield person now.

Also Portal opened me up to puzzle games, really like those alot.

Played a bit of Warcraft 3, Starcraft 2 and Fire Emblem when I was a kid. Of course, I had no idea what I was doing, though I enjoyed moving around little units and commanding them to do stuff. That interest in RTS games led me to try out playing MOBA games (Dota 2).

Meanwhile, Pokemon and Megaman Battle Network opened me up to RPG games while COD and GTA Vice City opened me up to shooter games. Oh, I also played a crap ton of point-and-click puzzle/adventure games when I was a kid, though I don't play those much nowadays.

Never played 1 before but I watched my brother play 2 for ages and when I finally was allowed to play it I loved it.

Haha, I'm exactly the same! I loved the AoE series so much but I was trash at it!

One of the first puzzle games that actually interested me was Portal, something about it was so intoxicating.

Command & Conquer games pretty much made me love RTS ever since i first played them. Doesn't matter which, from tiberian sun to red alert. Unfortunately i never had the opportunity to try age of empires, especially since a lot of times i had the bootleg versions of popular games in here, so it doesn't have any nostalgic value to me like it has to others.

As for turn based i used to really love Terror from the Deep (so its no surprise i kinda fangirled on xcom's 2 ending  ), and it pretty much made me experiment on other turn based games after that.

I kinda became a little too into FPS when i first played cs 1.6, to the point where sometimes i used my lunch money to play on internet pubs

What do you mean exactly? I don't know much about Counter strike but did you have to pay to play on other people's servers?

It was a place where i used to pay a certain fee depending on how much time i spent, in order to use the internet. Not many people had internet back then, so a lot used to go on internet pubs to play online games, i rarely saw anyone play anything other than cs 1.6.

Alternatively, most people call these places "cyber cafes". Most people in my region (SEA) usually come to these places to play Dota 2.

Why did people use the Cyber Cafes for gaming? Was it cheaper to do that then to get a Home PC + Internet?

Probably because it's not that they can't afford their own computers and internet access, but more so that they don't have access to them at home (i.e. their parents don't allow them). Plus, in cyber cafes, they can directly communicate with their pals if they're playing a team-based game such as Dota 2.

Ut 1999 showed me how fun it can be to play fps, snipe, run around shooting people like a noob, so perfect. And ut2004 showed me how much fun it is to use vehicles and play space themed games. Good times.

Gran Turismo 3 and Need For Speed: Most Wanted back in the day. Haven't stopped playing driving games since

Gran Turismo 2 was my shit, only reason I started playing any driving games at all.

TF2 was one of the first multiplayer games I ever played.

It introduced me to the genre of FPS shooters and how the culture in the community is "cancer".

FPS games in general, are the same. And since then, I sort of liked them.

It probably shouldn't count, but my first 'FPS' was Metroid Prime 3. While the motion controls weren't brilliant, the first person was amazing to me when I was 9.
