Dealing with a Gaming Addiction

Squidling

Recommended Posts

Recently, I realised that my gaming has gone a bit too far; while it used to be harmless, I'm now sacrificing the quality of my work in order to get some time playing something, which usually leads to a whole day wasted. I know that it's gone too far, and I want to nip it in the bud, which is why I'm posting this.

If any of you fellows have any suggestions on how best to quit, or even (dear god why am I saying this) motivation to stop, I'd appreciate it. I've tried to guilt myself out of it, but that hasn't worked and it's just made me feel more terrible when I relapse back into the habit.

I need to keep it under control for ~3 months, as I have some important examinations coming up that I definitely do not want to fail, although it would be good to learn how to properly control the habit permanently for later life.

Thanks, and have a good night

uninstall all games

I did that, but with the download size for Nuclear Throne and other such games being so small, I soon went back

uninstall steam for time of examinations then install it again

(i did it once and it worked)

I'll definitely be doing that again, I might be able to resist if I get my shit together

Yeah, I deleted steam and removed all games from my comps when I was in med school. 1.5 more years and I'll have to do the same again :(. But that did the job for me.

Pretty much the same situation as you; I probably will just try to go cold turkey again. I've got a couple of series (sereie? serii?) of books that I have been meaning to read, those can be my free time thing instead

I find uninstalling not really useful, as you will simply re-download the game.

I am somewhat addicted too xD And I think the best way, which is also the hardest, is to make you WANT to not start playing.

Seems stupid, but I found useful to think and reason a lot about how I was spending all the day playing, and what I was missing and even not looking in the meanwhile: school homeworks and the subjects for the following days that I should really review.

Forcing you to not play by uninstalling, locking with passwords, and so on, won't have any consistent effect as you actually NEED to have the determination to not play, and keep it without getting the more and more overwhelming feel of giving up. You may resist a few days yes, but then? Reinstalling/getting back that hidden password and else while your mind makes cheap excuses to not feel guilty, at least at first.

So, determination and reminding to be determined. Maybe a post-it on the screen "DO NOT PLAY!", I believe that last one helped me a lot during the worst moments xD

In my opinion, it's a psychological problem that needs to be solved psychologically, not physically.

Also about this matter, it reminds me of a video of LazyPurple, and I was quite surprised on how serious he was about it. Maybe right because he was excessively addicted.

I found it interesting, if you want to give it a look here it is

(note that the gameplay footage was to fill the graphic part of the video while he is talking, so don't judge by that)

Aren't you supposed to be studying instead of being here? :^)

You should try playing meditating music when you relax. Works on me all the time. Games are meant to be fun, not as an aggressive sport.

When studying or doing work, don't do it at the place you play. Go to someplace like a library and/or work with others. I find it better when you have to commit to working with others than just yourself. It's a habit that you have to work into.

you need to think of things that could happen if you didn't do your work, its something the drill instructor at basic training taught the cadets.

Think of the reprecussions of not doing your work, failing classes, not graduating. assuming you want your family to live a happy life you want a career, and you won't get a career when  you've failed high school.  (this was just an example, idk if you are highschooler or a grown man)

What I do is put a camera behind me and turn it so it feels like eyes are watching me, it makes me want to do my work since its  the only thing i can do that they want me to.

I never really backed away from playing games when I really needed to but nonetheless, what I found was very effective (for me atleast) was asking someone to downgrade your internet speed. I did that in may 2015 and thats why I left here for the entire month. i got alot of work done and had time to do what i enjoyed.

But installing steam works too.

This works.

My formula:

Running Mac OS: It's so wonderful that it can't even load HL 2 without crashing, so it will stop you playing games.

8track: Free music mixes. Instrumental works best. When I work is the only time I can appreciate Mozart and Beethoven  :D

Since you don't have a Mac, first, you back up all your game files in to an external hard drive. Then, give that hard drive to your mom  :P  tell her to put it in the family safe or something (your friends might be soft on you and give it back to you when you beg). Now uninstall Steam. Done.

Think bad thoughts about the game. (Worked for me on everything, haven't played a game in like a week until today due to mostly boredom)

Games that worked for me

Dota 2 = Kept crashing and going to low priority

CS:GO = Thailand/Chinese players that always kick me at the end of the match

TF2 = Autobalance

Plague Inc Evolved = Fuck Greenland

Though, you'll mostly likely lose entertainment/excitement from those games permanently.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there; uninstalling alone just doesn't work. I'll definitely try placing a few reminders around my computer just to try to keep myself in the right frame of mind. Thanks for taking the time to ofder your advice, I appreciate it :)

The fact that my desktop is much more modern and work-friendly has kept me working on it, but i do think this is solid advice. I might dust off my old laptop and find a new place to work, that definitely sounds like a good plan

Heh, I guess that's true XD

Depending on my mood, music has helped before, so i'll probably dig out some mellow music that I haven't heard in a while

That might actually help, if I can't get my laptop into a decent condition; I'm pretty sure i can wreak some OS havoc without causing irreperable damage in order to cripple gaming performance. Thanks for the music recommendation as well, i haven't heard of the site but i'll give it a try!

The HD idea is also interesting, i was thinking about doing something similar so I guess it's worth a shot

Well you can always uninstall all the games.

Shameless advertising

I wrote a small program a while back to help me, what it does is that you point it to an application (in this case i'd say steam) - and it prevents it from launching up unless you remove it from the list. I can send you it but idk if it will work for you as you can anytime remove it from the list and go back to playing.

Rest is up to you.

PM me if you want it

I looked into similar solutions, but as I know how to bypass them I always have done so in the past; thank you for your offer, though

You need to realise that gaming doesnt do anything practical for your life and is mean to be entertainment for your life not what is your life. Every time you sit down and procrastinate important stuff to play games realise you're wasting your life, do what you need to do first and do what you want to do after, if you're anything like me you will do what you want to do a lot longer than you're supposed to and end up cramming.

Not saying gaming is horrible but it needs to be at a level where it doesnt imped on what is important. Gaming isnt going to get you a job. Gaming can't pay you bills. So unless you want to be a 30 year old who is unemployed being a burden to your parents who should be retired being a waste of resources learn to do important things first and what you want later.

Harsh but this is reality. Deal with it.

Yeah, I guess; I've always found my work pretty easy, so I got settled into a laid-back frame of mind and let the gaming get a little out of hand, so now I do have to correct that. I know that it isn't an important thing, but I do have to train myself to get into the right mood for productive work for a longer period of time now
