Unusual hat tier guide!

I saw one of these a while ago that looked very, VERY outdated; I thought I'd give it a shot myself. I know I'm not a pro at trading, I don't count myself to be one, so constructive criticism is very welcome :). This is based off of demand and value. Leaving taunts, halloween and invasion hats out as I don't have too much experience with those. Feel free to help me out with them in the comments ;).

I wouldn't call the Beanie Low Tier, it actually sells for pure quite easily

I believe by tier he means how valuable the hats are in unusual form - it selling in pure easily has very little to do with that

Considering most of them are outdated................

in fact some of the hats in this list are sorted by 2 year outdated prices :\

I wouldn't consider the gibus as god tier. As much as I like those hats, they are a fucking pain in the ass to resell. I would put them in high tier.

While this is really opinion based it's still a shit load of work so props to you for that.

I think it could use some work though, a lot of this just goes off of bp.tf pricing vs. hard/not hard to sell for pure

I don't think the hard work paid off. I mean, there are loads of outdated hats, such as the toy tailor (now that the soldier could wear that hat).

There are some big mistakes here. Normally, I wouldn't point them out cause these types of lists are bound to have a few mistakes that can easily be taken as grains of salt, but these mistakes are ridiculous. No offense, Jack.

Low-mid tier:

Coupe D'isaster ~> Low-mid tier? This definitely belongs on the low tier.

Mid tier:

Sole Mate ~> seems rather low, could use a bump to Mid-high tier.

Mid-high tier:

Troublemaker's Tossle Cap ~> high tier or even high-god tier without a doubt

Condor Cap -> could be on the high tier

Ground Control ~> same with the condor

Cold Killer ~> mid-high tier only? it averages ~90 keys

High tier:

Fortunate Son ~> could be a little higher, but it's probably the hype talking to me

Soldiered Sensei ~> this is really high, considering that it's most expensive effect is only ~165
Swagman's Swatter ~> seems rather high, GE and PE are only on the ~70-90 ballparks. Should be on the mid-high tier
Aviator Assassin ~> should be on the mid-high tier, but can be considered high tier so meh
Fancy Fedora ~> same with the Aviator

High-god tier:

Anger ~> definitely on the god-tier

God tier:

Hazmat Headcase ~> how is this not unbelieveably off the charts? Effects like NnB and Steaming are over 100 keys

Mask of the Shaman ~> not to the same extent as the Headcase, but I think it fits there.

Large Luchadore ~> this seems rather high, it only averages ~72 keys

Noh Mercy ~> same case with the Headcase and the Mask of the Shaman

That would be the Toy Soldier, not the toy tailor.

http://backpack.tf/unusualsCouldn't someone just look here, and sort by class if they wanted to to determine what is high tier, low tier, god tier, etc. I don't really see the point of having a hand created list

The unusual pricelist is completely based off of prices, it doesn't help people determine how good something will sell. Someone who's new to trading could take one look at that and instantly assume a Burning FR-0 is better than a N&B KE just because it's worth more, when in actual fact, the KE would be a much easier sale.

I agree and disagree with a lot here. The Coupe, Sole Mate, Tossie, Ground Control, Cold Killer and Sensei shall be moved. I made the "Unbelievably off the charts" tier specifically for unusual miscs as they're far, far higher than any other unusuals. I'll keep the Shaman, Hazmat and Noh in God tier as they're not on the same level as the miscs.

Ah, that makes sense. Except for the "they're far, far higher than any other unusuals" part. Do you mean they're much higher tier than the rest, or rarer?

Definitely the standard method, but it's nice to have it rearranged by tier only, instead of by tier and by class.

The formatting would be much better in a table format though.  First column would be the tiers and top row would be classes.  Would make it a bit easier to view.

This post is more aimed towards lesser-experienced traders who could do with knowing a little bit more of how unusuals are ranked to other players. Experienced traders can just use the backpack.tf pricelist and be done with it.

I was going to make a list like this last week but gave up after about 30 minutes - it's really hard putting an accurate and comprehensive list together because practically every price on backpack.tf is wrong or outdated. You've got "God tier" hats on there that say the average price is like 250 keys yet you go through actual sales and most of the 250 key hats are being traded away for item offers worth like 140 keys. Then there's mid tier hats for the same class with an average value of 80 keys but because half of them are 1/1 or 2/2 effects they're all being sold for like 300 keys or near equal item offers. The entire thing makes no real sense and you can't even easily rank them based on popularity due to everyone liking certain hats more than others. I know I personally think that some "Mid" tier pyro hats are better looking than "God" tier soldier or scout hats.

They're not weapons where you can gather a unanimous opinion of something like default sniper > machina, hats are an entirely personal preference, with only a few things in my opinion that I commonly see which determine value;

1. All-class hats will always generally be worth the most.

2. Multi-class hats (e.g wearable by 2 or 3 classes) will always be worth a lot too, sometimes as much or more than all-class ones.

3. Anything retired will be usually be worth more than most non-retired hats/miscs.

4. Anything that's a misc or is expected to become a misc at some point in the near future will be worth a lot.

5. Hats worn by extremely popular, competitively used power classes are desired the most - aka soldier and scout. Nobody cares about spy/heavy/engineer/sniper hats even if the hat looks great and the effect is great too.

6. Any all-class, multi-class, soldier etc hat that only has a couple of top tier effects in existence for the particular hat will be worth a lot (aka. a soldier hat with only 3 burning flames copies will be worth more than a soldier hat where there are 37 burning flames copies of the hat)

7. Any hat fitting the categories above that has one of these effects will be worth a lot - Burning Flames/Scorching Flames/Sunbeams/Cloudy Moon/Harvest Moon/Secret to Everybody/Roboactive/Antifreeze/Nebula.

and finally...

8.. Hats that were retired after only a couple of years of unusual effects will be worth quite a lot (by this I mean a hat that got retired after the second gen of effects and second gen of Halloween effects will be quite popular because the hat hasn't been "tainted" by a mass of cheap third gen and robo/Halloween effects. People like it when a hat mainly only has expensive first gen effects and a few nice Halloween ones available for it rather than loads of cheap low tier modern effects cluttering up the market meaning anyone can afford a low tier unusual effect version of the same hat they paid 1500 keys for, at only 30 keys or so) There's a huge hatred for new effects if it's not on an all-class or multi-class hat.

I know that you probably put a lot of effort into this, so I don't want to sound too critical, but a lot of your points are inaccurate if not just plainly false.  Let's take a look:

1. All-class hats will always generally be worth the most.

True mostly.  However, there are quite a few all-class hats which are priced lower than high-tier single class hats.  E.g. Tree, Noble, etc.

2. Multi-class hats (e.g wearable by 2 or 3 classes) will always be worth a lot too, sometimes as much or more than all-class ones.

There are a few multi-class hats which follow this rule (TC, Undercover.....hwnn?) but there are just as many that don't.

3. Anything retired will be usually be worth more than most non-retired hats/miscs.

Again, it's way too general.  The Stash is retired and it's valuable.  The football helmet and the Fro are also retired, but nobody cares.  There also needs to be a distinction between legitimately retired and 'was never supposed to be unboxed in the first place', like the coffin kit for example. Huge difference there.

4. Anything that's a misc or is expected to become a misc at some point in the near future will be worth a lot.

Misc hype is pretty much dead at this point.  There are still a few overpriced hats (overpriced because they once had misc hype) out there (e.g. Lucky Shot), but Valve hasn't turned anything into a misc for at least a year when they used to do it every other month.   True obviously that miscs are more valuable (in general) than most hats.

5. Hats worn by extremely popular, competitively used power classes are desired the most - aka soldier and scout. Nobody cares about spy/heavy/engineer/sniper hats even if the hat looks great and the effect is great too.

Following that logic, the only hats people care about are soldier, scout, demo, medic and pyro.  It implies that hats for other classes don't sell, but they sell just fine.  Also important to get away from the mindset that only classes which are viable in 6s will sell.  There are way more unusual traders and collectors which don't play comp than do.

6. Any all-class, multi-class, soldier etc hat that only has a couple of top tier effects in existence for the particular hat will be worth a lot (aka. a soldier hat with only 3 burning flames copies will be worth more than a soldier hat where there are 37 burning flames copies of the hat)

True....I guess....again though, it's too general.  For example, the helmet without a home has very few god-tier effects, but it's not worth shit.

7. Any hat fitting the categories above that has one of these effects will be worth a lot - Burning Flames/Scorching Flames/Sunbeams/Cloudy Moon/Harvest Moon/Secret to Everybody/Roboactive/Antifreeze/Nebula.

True,. but pretty obvious.  An AF miscs will obviously be worth a lot on just about any class.

I'm pretty certain this concept doesn't exist.  There are so many examples which are contrary to this line of thought.   I'm pretty sure nobody thinks of hats as "tainted" when they are unboxed in 3rd gens, etc. Also, 3rd gen/robo/halloween >>>>>>> 2nd gen

I believe by tier he means how valuable the hats are in unusual form - it selling in pure easily has very little to do with that

If that's the point of the list, then the list isn't any more useful than the http://backpack.tf/unusuals list

Although I think someone (mindacos) might make a list for the ability to sell in pure / general likability.  Which will be an epic list :^)

The point in this list is to rate unusuals on how much they sell for and how easily they sell. Whether it be in pure or items. Basically how much attention they get.
