Gaben. Help me convince my Father. $350 Used "Gaming" PC vs $730 Prebuilt "Work" PC

First off. Hi. Before you say anything let me explain myself a little bit. I'm a High schooler who just got tired of playing games on my old aging laptop. The laptop does me well but with school coming close my poor old laptop won't be able to handle any photoshop, video editing etc that I would need for High School. So where to look for a pc that could game and do school work that a broke teen like I could do. And I managed to finally found the holy grail. A I7-2600 paired with a GTX 650 on a MSI B75MA-P45 Mobo for only a small fee of $350. Seeing this amazing deal I freaked out and told my father that this is a deal I couldn't walk away. I had $240 already and all he would have to pay would be the last half for the PC and a decent monitor. My father being hesitant wanting the best decided to look at pre builts at Frys. Him knowing only the basics of PCs asked his IT department and what they came up with was this. $730 pre built pc for "work" (http://www.frys.com/product/7721568?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG) A I7-4770 with no GPU no upgradability since the PSU is a 12 pin and the motherboard only supporting 12 pin PSUs. My dad wanting the best for me kept egging me on for this but I've tried to convince him that paying $730 for something that will brick eventually and can't be used for anything else than work is not worth it. Needless to say it's been difficult. The IT people in his department obviously don't know much since the first words they said to my father was "Oh if it's not wireless than it's old!!! All the new stuff is wireless" -_-. So I ask of you the wiser people who have machines made to play and work to help me convince him. I will soon show him the comparisons for the I7-2600 vs I7-4770 but you guys are my first line of defense. Help me convince him that my PC is worth it more WAY more than that Pre built. I am just trying to save him money and heart ache in the future. So please help me Android God and remember to keep the comments clean as obviously I'm showing this to my father.

TL;DR Convince my father that A $350 dollar PC with a I7-2600 and GTX 650 is better than the Prebuilt non Upgradeable I7-4770. Show him that just because the name says "gaming" doesn't mean it can't be used for work and will last longer.

Thank You.

"you cant upgrade this pc so if it breaks you wasted 730 dollars good job dad"

Definitely one way to say it. These IT guys have no idea what they're talking about. They don't even know what Ubuntu is... Unfortunately my dad thinks upgrading is buying a new pc. So if you could perhaps rephrase it in a way better way my father could understand that just because its "gaming" and "old" doesn't mean it can still be used and for work purposes as well IE photoshop video editing for school.

"Think of it like this. Would you rather have a cheap car that can take you anywhere and will last you long into the future, or a more expensive car that can do only as much as the cheaper car and is likely to break down within the next 2 or 3 years?"

Maybe not the best analogy, but try to explain it to him in a way he can understand. Clearly he doesn't understand computers, but maybe he'll understand something else.

Ask him "Do you even know what a gpu does? No? I know better about pcs so we're picking a good pc over a prebuilt shit"

Hey, dad of this guy, your son want this machine and with minimum funding from your side, but you want to buy him machine that he don't want, and for way way more money. Is there any point? I don't see it.

Also, pricey =/= better, and your IT guys are morons.

outpost traders or scammers is what those it specialists sound like to me. that or they really are ignorant. having a versatile pc is much better than a rock thats gonna last for 3 years before it gets outdated. tell your dad to do some more research rather than relying on one source of information that could always be wrong.

tl;dr

the it specialists are wrong, dad needs research, sell me your keys for 1.75.

Wait is that prebuilt piece of poo even with a graphics card?

No. It's "work" computer, i. e. overpriced trash for those who don't know shit about.

I have sold computers, I worked at Best Buy for 6 years. This 30-something, with money sensibilities, knows his computers, and he knows a STEAL, and your dad is viewing this all wrong. That used rig is a steal at under $400.

He sees a used item that will likely not last, and while buying used does come with that chance, buying from a big box store is hardly any better.

Our RMA's are something like 40%, meaning 40% of ALL computers and laptops come back. Why? Because people buy and realize it wasn't worth the price.

You're getting an awesome price. Let your dad know that "old" computer would likely cost $1000 to build yourself, and comes with the ability to switch out parts modularly, which is something becoming more and more difficult with pre-fabs.

It's like buying a 2014 Honda VS buying a 2016 Toyota new off the lot. Value depreciates tenfold. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's a better value.

AND. Work doesn't mean just work, gaming doesn't mean just gaming, BUT, a work PC likely CAN'T game out of the box, while a GAMING pc will handle ANYTHING you through at it. Advanced photoshop? a breeze, Video editting? No issue.

I know your dad thinks he's doing best by you, offering to get the newer pc, but mose high end gaming rigs from 3-4 years ago will out perform any big box "work" pc by a mile.

Print out the reply's you've gotten, have him do his research. The sales department at most big boxes know next to nothing about computers, they are there to sell you expensive items and make a profit, not give you what you need. I know, I was there, I've been and done that.

The used PC outperforms that work PC, and at half the price, not to mention, to get that work PC to a performance level of the used one, you'd need to drop another $300 on a GPU, so it WILL end up costing you more.

If he's stubborn and sticks with the prefab, don't put a dime of your money toward it. You could buy a decent GPU to throw in it at that price.

Dad's are stubborn ( I'm learning that about myself, ha). He means well, don't make it an argument, educate him.

He's probably operating under the assumption that while it can be used for both, you will be tempted into just screwing around with games if the computer is maximized for games.

Well I understand his view point but with the $350 it's the same processor pretty much and a GPU is an added bonus. Just because it's old does not mean it not's good.

Don't believe computer manufacturers. If you're wanting a gaming PC, a GTX 650, while dated now, is MILES better than the HD Graphics 4600.

The best way to think of it is that an AMD Sempron 3850 and an R9 Fury X will get you through more games than an i7-5960X and a GT 730.
