A new computer from scratch

Recommended Posts

Being frustrated with my comp this days. 2.4 Ghz Q6600 processor and I can't even overclock since dell stupidly locks your BIOS forever.

Budget is about 800-1000$. I want to try and keep this as cheap as possible. It's my parents money, not mine.

Things I have for a new build:

AMD Radeon HD 7750 - 1GB - GDDR5

Taipan mouse and Goliathus mouspad

Some generic brand PSU.

2 harddrive from my old PC.

Things that I need:

Case

Ram

Monitor (Maybe)

Keyboard (Maybe)

PSU

CPU

Motherboard

(Pretty much everything)

Pfft. Maybe even a new chair. My chair is a wooden one with a steel frame. Going to have back problems if this keeps going.

You'll also need a new gpu. No point in upgrding the cpu without the gpu.

Anyway, I don't know phillipine pricing so how much would something like this be:

  • i3-4130 (ideally i5-4440 if budget allows)
  • Any MSI/Asus/Gigabyte/AsRock LGA 1150 board
  • 8gb ram (preferably a single 8gb stick since the cheapest motherboard will probably only have two memory slots)
  • R9 280 (or above if budget allows)
  • Corsair/EVGA/Cooler Master/Fractal Design/Superflower/Seasonic/Silverstone/XFX 80+Bronze 500w+ psu
  • There are honestly a ton of choices and it really depends on regional pricing...
  • Cooler Master Devastator (keyboard+mouse bundle)
  • 23-24" 1080p monitor

Whats the difference of a bad motherboard to a good one?

Does manufacturer of ram matter?

(There are honestly a ton of choices and it really depends on regional pricing...) <-this about the case?

i3-4130 - 110~120$

R9 280 - 220~240$ (Second hands) New - 350~360$

Cooler Master Devastator Bundle - 50~60$

ViewSonic VX2452MH 23.6 inch LED mon - 190~200$

Corsair PSU - 60-70$

=640~650$

Still need ram, case, and fans.

You can replace the RAM and/or case depending on your local pricing or aesthetic preference, however, try to only buy from good brands and don't buy something too plastic-y or too small. I'm not sure if EVGA sells PSUs in Phillipines, so you might want to replace that with a 500W 80+bronze Seasonic or corsair, maybe cooler master or fractal design.

Edit: forgot to add a cpu cooler. I'd suggest a hyper 212 evo (classsic choice), scythe kotetsu (according to silentpcreview.com it is really good) or maybe gelid tranquillo (which I use myself, it might not be available in the US). If you want you can keep the stock cooler but the video card can run pretty quiet so a quiet CPU cooler would complement it nicely.

And if you don't want to overclock any time later, you can replace the i5-4690K with a i5-4440

updated partlist:

you can keep the Z97 motherboard (from the first list) if you wish, it's only 10$ more.

These days the difference is mostly just the # of ports, whether it can support overclocking, etc... So, buy a cheap motherboard (from a reliable brand is perfectly okay).

Manufacturer of the RAM really doesn't matter -- assuming it's not a no-name brand. (Corsair, G.Skill, Crucial, TEAM, Adata, Muskin, and a bunch more that I can't think of off the top of my head are all good)

Yes, there are a lot of cases to pick from and it really depends on regional pricing. There are two choices when it comes to cases...either get something nice or something cheap (although the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive as it comes down to personal taste) -- the only thing to keep in mind with a cheap case you don't really like too much is that you may end up replacing it in the somewhat near future.

Well, I guess the last thing to decide is what kind of performance you want/how much you want to spend. Going with an i5-4440 would definitely be worthwhile, as would going with an R9 280x/290/290x, but it all comes down to the performance you want and how much you want to spend. As for case fans nicer cases usually come with enough fans.

A list of most of the cases I would consider: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/djdwosk97/favorites/#dg_case

The stock cooler is fine, is that really the cheapest RAM kit/motherboard (also, you really want 8gb).

For mice/kb there are also other choices, the devastator is a good choice though because it's usually cheap and is good.

Can't do anything with ram. All that brands you suggested are all 100$ flat.

How bout this motherboard?

Kingston is equally good.

I'm good then. I'll look around to see if I can find the same product for cheaper prices.

Thanks.

Went around finding parts this afternoon. They do not have i3 4130s, they have i3 4160s. Do I need a heatsink btw? Is cougar psu any good? Is coolermastrr pc casing any good?

A 4160 is fine, although there is the potential that it won't work with a non-97 board out of the box (albeit at this point it's a pretty small chance that it won't be compatible).

Cougar is crap, stay far away.

Cooler Master is fine. For cases it mostly comes down to looks since even a shitty case is still functionally decent.

You think a i3 4160 would work on an h81 mobo? Are lg monitors any good?(IPS)

Yes LG monitors are good. A 4160 would more than likely work on an H81 board. The thing is the 4160 is a Haswell Refresh chip, and thus needs a board with a bios that was released almost a year ago -- so more than likely any h81 board you buy will have a compatible bios -- but the possibility of getting a board from really old stuck does exist (albeit highly unlikely).

Lose the cpu cooler and put that money towards an i5 instead.

Todays the day I buy the thing. What i5 exactly? Why not get a heatsink?

Any LGA 1150 i5. Ideally the i5-4440 (since it's guaranteed to work on an h81 board), although any i5 will more than likely work. And because the stock heatsink is decent enough for stock speeds.

You'd need a z97 board (technically a z87 board could work -- albeit it would have the same potential issue as an h81 board), and a cpu cooler such as the Hyper 212.

The refreshed version of the 4440. So fine -- like I said, all Haswell i5 are fine.
