Need help on fixing internet speed (again)

So this is a part 2 from my previous thread of last year http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/17596-internet-very-slow/

My internet kinda fixed itself so that's why I stopped replying to the thread. But the slowdown started again about 2 months ago. I assumed it would fix itself again but I don't think that's happening anytime soon.

I need help again. Pretty much the exact same things that happened before are happening again. I reread all the posts in the thread and tried every possible fix mentioned and got nothing.

Router I'm using: At&t motorola nvg510 modem/router

I am also using a laptop with a wireless connection.

DNS server: Google's DNS server

DNS server ping: 0ms wired/2ms wireless

Don't tell me to change ISP because that isn't an option. Any other help is appreciated. Thanks

My current speed as of 4/21.

I looked your router up and it has terrible user ratings.  People genuinely hate the thing and say it's a piece of crap.

The first thing I would do is make absolutely sure that my wireless is secure.  According to your previous thread, you are in a house with multiple users, so turning it off is probably not an option, but that would be the first thing I would do.  The reason for this is that if you have one or more neighbors heavily leeching internet from your wireless router, this can adversely affect your connection, since you have a limited amount of bandwidth to go around at any given moment.  Someone might be torrenting on your connection, for example, and these torrents could be running 24/7, clogging up your connection.

Since disabling your wireless functionality is likely not an option, the next best thing would be to make it as secure as possible.  Enable encryption, make sure everyone using it has to enter a new password every few days, and authorize each device by its hardware address so that only the devices that you want to allow to connect will be able to.  This won't make it 100% secure, since anyone within range can still sit there and packet sniff your wireless long enough to figure out the encryption, required mac addresses, password, and then spoof one of your machines.  But that's WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY outside the scope of what 99% of people know how to do.

If once you've secured everything and made sure that nobody in your house is hogging all your bandwidth by running porn torrents 24/7 or infected with some kind of bandwidth eating malware or something, call your ISP and complain that you're no longer getting the service you're paying for.  It's likely their fault, and therefore their responsibility to fix it.

Also a quick easy test you could run just to see if your speed improves is to give one machine physical access to the router via ethernet, and disable the wireless functionality of the router completely so that nobody can use it.  Make sure that the one machine with physical access via ethernet is totally clean.  No malware.  Then run your speed test from it.  If your speed improves, then your problem is definitely due to a device either inside or outside of your house using the connection too heavily.  As I stated previously, this could be intentional or it could be from some kind of malware infecting one or more devices.  That would be something you'd have to figure out.

Thanks Heated Bread. I'll be sure to try most of that tomorrow when nobody is home. Though I don't really think that our neighbors have access since it's pretty secure. I'll still do a password change just to make sure that isn't the case. I'll post results tomorrow when completed.

And yep. The modem really is a piece of crap :/ idk why my dad keeps buying it. And to be honest, I don't know if any other would work.

You think what you have is bad. I have to put up with 600kb per sec

But what I have is bad. I'm only getting 170kb per second when I'm supposed to be getting your same speed or more. If one person in my family goes on youtube, everybody else gets fucked. Which is pretty much everyday after 4pm since my brother is constantly on there.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/4306829227- Ethernet speed test with wireless turned off

Slightly faster wired but that's expected. Not too much of a difference though.

The one device that's always connected with an ethernet is my dad's computer. However, it's password protected and I don't know it. My brothers do but they're in school atm. I guess that test will have to wait for tomorrow.

I was planning on moving over to reddit if I didn't get an answer here. Tbh I'd rather post here first since I'm that sap that isn't very tech savvy. Plus I'm pretty sure I'd get a lot of >att posts over there. I was also planning on linking this thread onto there so I wouldn't have to type everything again.

What speed are you paying for? What is your bandwidth cap, and have you gone over that?

Also try calling AT&T and complaining.

Dad is paying for a 6 megabit plan. If you mean cap as in the bandwidth maximum, it's supposed to be ~5.4ish. The highest speed we've ever gotten from this was around 4 megabits. Then one day the speed was halved and it's been like that ever since.

We've tried complaining to AT&T but they say there's nothing wrong with our connection. Their support is terrible.

Finally had the chance to test out the speed on my dad's computer. I'm getting roughly the same speeds I got with my laptop.

I suppose it's now safe to assume it's the router that's broken. But I'm still not too sure on that. I'll try to convince my dad to let me buy a different router or at least call in the tech guy to check our connections but I doubt that's going to happen.

I'll consider this thread over for now. Thanks, everyone.
