Forum Specific Suggestions

polar

Recommended Posts

Website suggestions should be requested here: http://backpack.tf/issue. If you post a website discussion in this sub-forum, just be aware that Brad / Fiskie may never see it. Few people frequent / comment there, so I'm not opposed to leaving this sub-forum open to people wanting to discuss potential website suggestions more thoroughly. And I'm not opposed to people posting in both places.

I have no control over changes that happen there. What I can do is entertain good suggestions for changes in these forums and implement them in a more timely manner. I was looking at older forum suggestions and found that most of them have already been accepted / implemented. If you have a specific forum suggestion, post it here if you'd like us to evaluate it quickly. It's still fine to make a separate thread in website suggestions if you'd like a more thorough discussion. Suggestions requested here will probably be answered quickly with a "yes" or "no" without much discussion.

A separate status section (or a dedicated status thread for bullshit :3) solely for spam, thereby allowing statuses to actually be useful...

This is another thing that may not be able to be done. The forum host software, as far as I know, does not allow you to have two status update sections. I never saw anything of the sort when I had access to the admin console on Sourcerep, and I played around with it every day trying to optimize.

And even past that, I don't think this is really necessary, the spam status updates aren't all that annoying, I don't have any major problems with them.

But then you ask someone to PC an item for you but the status gets buried in 2 minutes because some users decided to riot or spam pointless shit.

Well, mate, you should have voted when I asked about moderating status updates :P. We decoupled the GB from recent topics and people are upset enough about that. I don't think we'd do this on top of that even if we could.

I did say something; everyone else was just being stupid.

But the forums doesn't let you make a post if you're not signed in, so I'm confused. @~@

Edit: Going through each and every subforum while logged out, it seems that only the Artist's Lounge and CS:GO Trading subforums allow thread-making without logging in. I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but that should be reverted for at least the CS:GO Trading subforum. :P

There was someone in the Artist's Lounge that had made a thread while not logged in, and I was confused because the forums does not let you make posts while logged out, so I went through each subforum and found out that the Artist's Lounge and CS:GO Trading (both item and cash) subforums allow thread-making while logged out. I'm not sure if this was a mistake on your end, but that should probably be reverted at least for CS:GO Trading.

Since I've found this thread again, I'll remake my suggestion here.

Change polls so people can have at least 10-20 questions and many more choices per question, maybe 100.

When sourcerep was still a thing, I edited the polls in admin console and made it 20 questions and 100 choices per, and that worked pretty well. Currently its hard to encompass everything in a poll.

Done. 10 questions, 50 total choices. Not going to make it more than that, as nobody will take the poll seriously beyond that.

Can you move those three new subforums you placed in General Discussion to somewhere else? It's just strange being affronted by them in general discussion of all places.

I support the forums themselves, but perhaps you could put them in a dedicated subforum for them, maybe called "Unrelated Discussions" or something of the like. Just to keep them out of the way.

Some forum specific suggestions I have:

Made a thread a while back with suggestions specific for the forum (http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/27634-forum-suggestions/). All of those suggestions got added overtime so I'm going to add some new suggestions here!

1. Get rid of the overall top posters list.

Why? Some users are seeing it as an achievement to get as high as possible on this list and make new threads/posts with meaningless content to just get higher on this list. Removing this list would reduce meaningless content/spammy content from the forums.

2. Get subforum 'Tf2 unusual trading'. http://forums.backpa...ding-sub-forum/

Why? Alot of people sell their unusuals at fixed prices. Nothing wrong with that according to puddingkip (http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/statuses/user/1794-puddingkip/?status_id=229450). And I can agree with this. However unusual trades blank out all the trades with items that can't be listed on the classifieds. Unusuals can be listed on the classifieds but it's not possible to adequatly sell a signed item on the classifieds, buy a specific craft nr., selling a glitched item, etc. A subforum specific for special items is therefore needed.  Perhaps: Tf2 unusual, Tf2 Uncommon items, Tf2 Cash Trading.

3. Suggestions to add overall tidiness (in order of importantness)

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/15-team-fortress-2-item-trading/Merge "Use the report function" with "Trading Forum rules".

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/27-team-fortress-2-cash-trading/Same as above

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/13-website-suggestions/Rename "website suggestions" into "forum suggestions. Since website suggestions can now be made onto the main site.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/17600-talk-to-a-dota-2-backpack-mod-thread/Unpin this dead thread.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/3127-remove-voting-on-main-pagelist-view/Why is this still pinned?

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/20139-steam-trade-offers-errors-what-do-they-mean/Remove "steam trade offers errors what do they mean" or update it. There are new errors such as error 25 and 26 which aren't even being mentioned. Or maybe put it in the guide subforum instead.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/18297-challenges-of-the-week/Pinned, but not active anymore.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/19-team-fortress-2-discussions/With the new added feature of more poll questions maybe we can merge all the best/worst halloween effects into 1 thread?

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/16753-guide-using-dota-2-lounge-for-proof-on-dota-suggestions/& http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/16132-psa-dota2bptf-suggestions-for-higher-tier-stuff-more-info/ can be moved into the guide subforum.

4. New Pinned thread for naming/describing Items

Why? I see alot of new threads asking to name/describe peoples weapons. A thread were all of these can be merged into can therefore be useful.

5. Add new forum rule: 'No needless quotes'

What do I mean with this? On some occasions I see people just quoting someone else without writing anything new. This is unecessary and can be considered spam. If a forum user agrees with someone it's not necessary to quote what has just been said but you can just give the post a like (the fact you reached your like quota isn't relevant). I have been reporting such needless quotes, but it might be useful to raise some awareness about this.

This sounds a bit illogical but here goes nothing.

Would it be possible to integrate .gifv/.webm support for our signatures? They seem to compress really well and we can implement a limit on length or file size, IF NEEDED, too.

Thanks for the input. I have responded to each point below.

1. Get rid of the overall top posters list.

If users post spam, it should be reported and they should get banned for that. This isn't really an appropriate measure to reduce spam.

2. Get subforum 'Tf2 unusual trading'. http://forums.backpa...ding-sub-forum/

Most of the tf2 trading is for unusuals already. It's pretty much implied that that is primarily an unusual trading forum with occasional other forms of trades. I don't think this needs to be separated out.

3. Suggestions to add overall tidiness (in order of importantness)

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/15-team-fortress-2-item-trading/Merge "Use the report function" with "Trading Forum rules".

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/27-team-fortress-2-cash-trading/Same as above

There are only three pinned threads in those subforums. If there were a lot of pinned threads and they were cluttered, I would gladly oblige. But the single biggest problem we have in those particular subforums is people not using the report function. It made up so many of our warning points and bans that we felt it needed a pinned thread on its own.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/13-website-suggestions/Rename "website suggestions" into "forum suggestions. Since website suggestions can now be made onto the main site.

I believe I addressed this very question in the very first paragraph of my op in this thread.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/17600-talk-to-a-dota-2-backpack-mod-thread/Unpin this dead thread

Done, thanks.

.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/3127-remove-voting-on-main-pagelist-view/Why is this still pinned?

I'll ask cleverpun what he wants to do.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/20139-steam-trade-offers-errors-what-do-they-mean/Remove "steam trade offers errors what do they mean" or update it. There are new errors such as error 25 and 26 which aren't even being mentioned. Or maybe put it in the guide subforum instead.

It was left open so people can update it over time. I don't really see the need to remove it entirely or even move it.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/topic/18297-challenges-of-the-week/Pinned, but not active anymore.

Done, thanks.

http://forums.backpack.tf/index.php?/forum/19-team-fortress-2-discussions/With the new added feature of more poll questions maybe we can merge all the best/worst halloween effects into 1 thread?

Unfortunately, polls can't be directly merged. Would need to make a new poll and I don't really think it's such a huge issue to warrant closing those and making a brand new one.

4. New Pinned thread for naming/describing Items

Why? I see alot of new threads asking to name/describe peoples weapons. A thread were all of these can be merged into can therefore be useful.

Show me some examples, and I'll think about making one up and merging. The issue I see here is that most people who seem to make these threads are relatively new and won't post in the pinned thread. This just makes more work for mods, and I don't think it's worth the time cost.

I never really got back to "what constitutes spam" in the forum rules section. I'll add this in. If you have other common examples of spam, please share them.

Requesting a new forum in the trading section. Something to the effect of "General Trading".

Frequently I want to request a service, and it doesn't fall under any of the current trading threads. For example, when I was looking for a person to trade keys to in return for them sending me an item in real life by mail, I had to post this in technology and gadgets, because I couldn't think of a better place for it. And even more recently, I wanted to have someone enter an alternate account of mine and put five dollars in it's wallet, in exchange for a few keys, another service I couldn't figure out which subforum to use.

This subforum would be for all sorts of things. Things that can't really be classified as cash or item trading, but really just service trading. Like a brokering service, which isn't really buying or selling, but something else, and the two real situations I listed above.

"But this subforum would be seldom used, as not many people are doing trades like this." You are correct, it would be an inactive subforum, but it would provide a home for strange requests and uncommon trades, something that we don't already have. The Dota 2 trading section is characteristically inactive here, but we still have that subforum for the select few using the forum who do trade in Dota 2.

It would probably be described as something like "This subforum is for trades that don't fall under any of the other trading categories on the forum. These include brokering, requesting services, bartering virtual items for items in real life, et cetera."

I suppose it would also be useful for selling games, since that is sort of a gray area as well.

Bring the chat-function back.

Just thought it might be fun to bring the old chat-box back?

We have grown alot since the last time it went away and I think it would actually be populated this time  :P

Ps Can't remember why it went away so I apologize in advance if this isn't possible.

It went away cause it was always dead. We aren't going to make any major changes to the forums in their current state because I know Brad/Fiskie/DrMcKay are thinking about / working on a completely different forum that's tied into the main site. Having said that, feel free to keep sending ideas because I'm sure they will appreciate input when it comes to building the home-cooked forums.

Just bumping this, I think polar missed it when another suggestion was posted and it went to the next page. He didn't address it, at least.
