DarkNeoryn
This season's Public Forum Debate has given it's attention to Genetically Modified Organisms. Specifically foods. What are your opinions on these and why? Personally, I believe that it depends on how you look at it. There's always danger and risks to almost everything. Warning labels are there for a reason. Nonetheless, there will still be controversy. GMO's were designed to help the fact that the resources we have do not fit our criteria. Whether it be Quantity vs Demand or Quality of it's natural aspects, GMO's have been designed to benefit us. But do they provide us enough benefits so that it will be worth it in the end? It really depends on how you perceive things. Please be respectful down there. Thanks, ~DarkNeoryn
Grimes
I strongly believe in GMO's, in many cases you can develop hardier, cheaper crops, which may be vital in 3rd world countries.
Heated Bread
I don't even have a clear idea of what the alleged dangers of genetically modified foods are supposed to be. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nauti
GMO's havent raised crop yields by much, and they are potentially harmful to the environments around them, they could crossbreed with a lot of things, creating another problem. I just don't see the point in using them. Either way it doesn't really matter to me. There's zero studies with credible evidance towards GMO's being harmful towards us, but. Why would others ban their use? They must have reason behind it. Edit: Though, they are shown to be pest repellent, I don't like the idea of eating it, unless it can pass through without leaving chemicals such as mercury would. GMO's definately have their Pro's and Con's.

silencedotmid
If you live in a developed country like the US, nearly all of the food you buy and eat is genetically modified in one way or another. There's really no way to avoid it.That being said, GMOs can be grown more efficiently and are going to have to be the way to feed the exploding population, and there's never been a conclusive study that proves they're any better or worse for you than unmodified food. nitrositro
Gonna be honest the topic can be spun in either way you want. There is a lot of evidence for both side of the pofo debate its just unreal.
Kai9001
I used to eat only GMO food as a child. I was constantly sick with a cough or a stuffy nose (24/7/365) even though I ate healthy for the most part. My mother when I was about 10 changed our milk to organic milk and I stopped being sick as much. I only got sick when most people got sick (flu season). Now we only get organic food and I hardly ever get sick. (inb4 I catch the flu next week) All I can say is this, you are what you eat. You get out what you put in. You eat something unnatural, you will feel unnatural. It would be good for developing countries in that if they have nothing to eat and there is no way to grow elsewhere and the choice is starve or eat GMOs, of course GMOs are better. But to thrive on GMOs for years (or a life time for that matter) will only stunt the growth of an individual.
♠Derpeh♤
Just saying but many things you eat everyday and classify as "normal" are genetically modified. - Orange carrots (They are meant to be purple) - Bannana (They are meant to have massive seeds in them) any many more

Mr. Dr. Professor Hamster
Hey cool, I'm in Policy Debates. I actually have some friends doing this. Personally, I'm against it, but that's only because I'm not sure if its in my food or not. I really couldn't give a smaller shit if someone gets some disease 'cause they decided to eat these. I also heard they have some environmental impacts and stuff, sooo, im iffy. I do agree with the developing thing though, that would help.

I mean sure, it helps in manufacturing efficiency and production rates, but the organization hasn't really informed us of any health effects it has. http://imgur.com/7mBhoAu ^ Lab rats put on a specific strain of GMO grains. DarkNeoryn
Aren't all bananas GMOs? I've heard that the original bananas died off and the GMBananas can't produce seeds or something. All the bananas sold at grocery stores and stuff are GMO's and genetically identical. They came from one single plant and reproduce asexually. A normal banana can be sold in other parts of the world. They're rare, though.
λngelღмander
Aren't all bananas GMOs? I've heard that the original bananas died off and the GMBananas can't produce seeds or something. There was a strain of bananas that was killed by a plant virus about fifty years ago, maybe a little more, so we came up with a new type of bananas, which taste noticeably different but are accepted anyway. The new strain of bananas is genetically modified. However, that doesn't make them unhealthy.

DarkNeoryn
This thread got a lot more attention than I expected it to have. :| But anyways, after doing a little more digging, GMO's were rejected by a lot of third world countries. I dunno why, but there was a US Embassy in Africa that gave the farmers GMO seeds and the farmers burnt them and threw them at the Embassy. :/
