Source Filmmaker Help desk/guide's

Got a problem in Source Filmmaker? Ask here!

I'm making this so that we won't have to make a new thread every single time run pass a problem/bug in SFM.

It's not only for helping other's with problems, but also a thread where you can post your own guide's for diffrent things in SFM, so that new people can get to learn it!

Guide's

Painting hats

There are many different ways to paint hats in SFM, and if you have tried googling it, you probably have found out already. The ing is, most of them are outdated, and the most up to date ones are theese two:

The other one is  this. I use this one myself every time it is possible, it's good and easy, the only con is that it doesn't work on all hats

(it works on 90% of them) but that is a minor thing.

Fixing the Disco Beatdown Particle Effect

I will help you with your problem if you got any, and keep adding some guide's for things that you might want to know :)

or, there are already hundreds of tutorials and guides, proving a help desk outdated, or obsolete.

Where would I find the Meet the Medic particle system?

I think the pcf is called tauntfx or something of that matter. I'll look into it when I get the time.

there is no medic pcf

I have one, thought it's not in that.

The white light you can see around the Medic is not a particle, it's actually a volumetric light, you have to add the birds afterwards.

Okay, I actually have a question for this desk. You see, australium cubemaps are a little weird the way they work with light. What I mean is:

Minimal lighting:

Normal light:

So basically, cubemaps don't seem to render when exposed to light. Do you know anything I could do?

I've experienced something similiar with the Australium Scattergun, let me have a look and see if it's the same glitch

I've already edited a dash being the wrong way in the mingun_gold.vmt (/ instead of \ on the line referencing to the australium minigun vtf), if that helps (didn't change anything in Source, even after reloading all materials).

EDIT: Also, now that I think about it, .vtf = Valve Texture File, .vmt = Valve Material Tile?

Have you edited the cubemap?

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf\materials\models\weapons\w_scattergun\, and open w_scattergun_gold.vmt in a text editor. Look for the line that says "$envmap" just above "$envmaptint" "[2.5 2.5 1.15]". Change it to: "$envmap" "cubemaps/cubemap_gold001"

This helps on the Australium Scattergun, but I'm not sure if thats what you are saying you already did.

The first thing I checked, and it seems as though that has already been edited by default.

Have you set "$detailblendfactor" to "0" instead of ".01" ?

Also, what model are you using? I used the w_minigun model and mine looks just fine with or without light:

And did you change the ToneMapScale on the camera?

- If it darkens the camera: yes

That's your problem then.

When you use that function you darken everything as you have noticed, it usually doesn't affect models as they are not self lit, it's usually only particles and other things that are self lit that will be affected.

With Australiums it's something different, even though they are a model, they are affected by it, I still have no clue why.

Just don't ever use it that much, it ruins alot of things. If you want darker maps without using it download the dark maps from the workshop, they have no lights by standard and will not affect anything.

Okay, I'll keep this in mind, thanks anyway!

Need some more help...

I'm trying to load up Badlands, and the arena version works, but attempting to load either cp_ or koth_ crashes SFM for some odd reason...

No popup error, no log, just instant close.

That's a problem no one knows yet how to fix. Everyone has that error, and it has got to be some error in the map that makes SFM crash, not even R234 know how to fix it.

So you can only use the arena version which sucks.
