Steamrep... The most useful tool to traders in many eyes, it's hard to disagree. Yet they really need to sort some things out, the first being the excessive time it takes to get a user marked. In my experience it took 6 months to get someone who scammed me marked. I don't care if he is marked now, it was a petty loss ( clean bud swapped for gifted)

This may not be very major, but with more major scams like cash backs or hijacking etc. Stolen goods are sold very soon after the scam, the point of steamrep is too simply search the user in the searchbar and check if he's safe. Taking 6 months gives the scammer countless time to sell the goods, while the scammed user is sitting in the forums waiting. A common reply is to check the forums, but there is no link to say to check the forums by steam rep, almost rendering it useless for new traders. Before you say they do the best they can and they do it for free etc. They have gained the reputation and should strive to keep it, with first steps being showing a link to a user on the forums if a claim has happened, to give notifications to also check the forums and finally employ more staff.

Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic website and had spotted and stopped many scams I'm sure. But with such reputation and people relying on them, they need to supply the demand.

What's your opinion?

P.s I wrote all of this on my phone, so any weird words you can blame spell check.=}

  • 4 weeks later...

this is a ragepost about steamrep and how slow they are handling reports. steamrep is there to keep an updated database about scammers and scammed items. but at this speed, there's no actual reason to report to them. by the time steamrep handles your report, the reported person could've scammed multiple people. why? because steamrep has backlogs of over 9 months back.

my reports:

take for example this: http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198054129718-bob.13217/

i posted that one in october last year. it took them a month to make it ready for review, and since 26th november its been sitting there.

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198067167862-6-buds.29223/ "will be reviewed shortly" about 1 month ago

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198039865342-bissem4n.10647/ early september 2012, ready for review since

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198060481707-circles-s-s-huntsman-9-keys.18292/ half a year, still waiting for review

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198010609170-miss-v-trade-banned.10793/ under investigation since september 2012

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198052578975-bendon-moon.7237/ under investigation since july 2012

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/teemo-note-for-informational-purposes.8171/ under investigation since july 2012

http://forums.steamrep.com/threads/76561198061653118-%E0%B9%96%DB%A3%DB%9Craikoh.12777/ under investigation since october 2012

^ these are one from each forum section.

so with these speeds, there's not actual reason to report. the ones ive reported have stopped trading more than half a year ago, if they wanted. they could continue on, why? because they arent banned anywhere. the bob guy, i reported him on op 4 times, linking to that report. he was never banned there either.

so right now, its useless to report someone. the reports arent handled fast enough, and in about 25% of the cases, not handled at all

Depends on traffic, same as any other site. And not only is the admin process for steamrep is much much stricter than most other places, but a lot of their admins quit because of burnout. Doesn't excuse the response time, but it does help explain it.

id be happy if they actually went backwards to front, dealing with backlog and not piling it up.

They actually work from the oldest to the newest reports. What happens sometimes is that people bump the reports making they go up in the pile. The same thing happens on the appeals section. Bumping them just slows down the process.

Each report is unique in its facts and developments, as there are many types of "taggable" offenses. They may take more or less time to be processed depending on all the work involved, which may or may not include confronting all parties involved, verifying screenshots' reliability, checking items' histories and IDs and cross-checking between databases, finding alt accounts, IP searches, etc.

not their fault, but they should lax up on requirements to join their team to help process reports.

I disagree. SR should be the one that requires the most out of its staff members, because the entire community (or most of it) trusts them to make the right decisions about people's actions.

Hi guys! I'm the Scam Reports team lead at SteamRep and I take full responsibility for the report backlog. I'm also going to detail some changes we've made to solve this problem and explain a little about what happened.

For well over 6 months, I was the only active reports admin. Despite working for hours every single day, I was not able to process all of the reports we were getting/got every day.  Because of that, we accrued a big backlog. I try to get to reports as fast as I can, and I will literally work on reports often until I fall asleep at the computer. A single report, even with adequate evidence, can take more time than you realize because we have to independently verify the evidence posted. Sadly, people have made false reports and we don't want anyone to be tagged who is innocent.

We now have three active reports admins and I've outlined a plan of action to remedy this situation. I've read your concerns and hopefully this will address them.

  • Every reports admin has a moderator assigned to him/her that will assign new scam reports to a specific admin. That way high priority reports, such as hijackings, can be handled within minutes and if any report "falls through the cracks", that admin can be contacted immediately.
  • We now have "live" SteamRep support. Vintage Cobra (admin) & kr'Cobra (moderator) are providing live SteamRep support via Steam chat to anyone who needs it. Reports that need attention, questions, etc. can all be handled real-time by them.
  • All new reports will be handled within 24-48 hours and get first priority. This does not include improperly formatted reports or reports that need more information, because we simply cannot finish processing them without that information. This also ensures that scammers get tagged quickly.
  • Every reports admin is responsible for a sub-forum and clearing that backlog.  Since there are only three of us, another SR admin has volunteered to step forward and take a forum. The remaining 3 forums fall to me to clear.
  • I am able to be emailed 24/7 by anyone if a report is not being handled fast enough.  PLEASE PLEASE let me know if a report has been waiting and not been cleared. I absolutely appreciate it and I will personally handle it as well as update you on the status. I have a SteamRep email address and can get my email no matter where I am or what I am doing, except possibly driving because that's dangerous. ;)
  • "Lower priority" reports, such as trades with scammers, are no longer being handled by active reports admins. Community admins are handling them based on the community where the offenses occurred.

Hopefully this will solve a LOT of the problems we have been having. Please be patient with us and remember that every SteamRep admin is a volunteer. We don't get paid for this. All of the SteamRep admins, except for me, have real-life jobs that they have to do as well.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I'm doing what I can to turn things around and I sincerely, sincerely apologize.

Christley, I checked all those threads and I see what the problem was- almost all of those were "trading with scammers" posts and were handled by an associate or affiliate community. I have gone ahead and changed the prefixes. As I stated above, active reports admins no longer handle those reports as they are better served by the community where the trades occurred.  As SteamRep does not have any trading site or trade servers, it is not possible for people to trade on SteamRep itself.

In addition, many of the scammers reported were already tagged. :)  We try to get scammers who are not tagged first as they pose a higher threat to the community. When I was the only tagging admin, I would get new reports and untagged scammers first because I had to prioritize and it's more important to get the word out about a scammer who was not already tagged. If he already has a tag, the community is already aware to stay away from them.

Thanks for the first helpful reply, I posted on the Steamrep forums and there was a lot of "It's free, stop complaining".

Yet I still have some questions, what else will you be doing in the future to stop back logs? And finally is charge backs not counted as urgent; my example

I even took out the evidence, as I had some paypal names and steam login info on it. Showing that once it's ready for review, I can remove evidence. Whats going to happen to stop this? Also requesting for you to check it as it's fairly clear a chargeback scam happened.

Steamrep... The most useful tool to traders in many eyes, it's hard to disagree.

I disagree.

Even bazaar.tf is more useful.

Backpack.tf and Outpost a lot more useful.

why not write off backlogs until they are needed...

today steamrep admin Matt T added me to ask some questions. he wanted to know the trade i made w/ a marked scammer which i had to find out myself as he was cagey. probably the enquiry was made because i left rep on his profile after he went first and paid me 3$. it didnt sound formal but that was a pester.

however the point is .... it just seems much much riskier in cash trading, which i have just started. i think i can avoid every scams except chargebacks. it comes down to my selling choices. some ppl have ok hours, ok backpack offer to buy fairy dear items relative to their bp. i traded w/ some borderline ppl, just hoping they r good. anyway wat is the chargeback period?

i just dont know where to draw the line, i.e. not selling them things over 15% of their bp value; or by some other measures...
